Babylon the Great: Discernment and Faithfulness in Revelation 17

Revelation 17 opens with one of the seven angels calling John to see the punishment of the great prostitute who sits by many waters. The great prostitute is not just some strange picture out of a movie. The image represents an evil, antichrist-controlled world system before Jesus returns, a spiritual adultery that pulls kings, nations, and people into idolatry. Babylon the Great stands for organized rebellion, blasphemy, and the persecution of God’s people.

John sees the woman sitting on a scarlet beast covered with blasphemous names, with seven heads and ten horns. The woman looks royal, dressed in purple and scarlet, glittering with gold, precious stones, and pearls. But the beauty is deceptive. The golden cup in her hand is filled with abominable things and the filth of her adulteries. Sin works like that. The enemy puts shine on something filthy and tries to make destruction look attractive.

The woman is drunk with the blood of God’s holy people, the blood of those who bore testimony to Jesus. Babylon hates anybody of Jesus Christ. The beast and the system behind it want people to follow the antichrist and turn against the Lamb. Yet the angel tells John not to be astonished. The beast is going to be defeated. For believers whose names are written in the Lamb’s book of life, the craziness of the world should not create fear, because Scripture already warned that these things would happen.

The seven heads and ten horns are hard to understand, and Revelation 17 is one of the toughest chapters in the book. The seven kings likely point to world empires, five fallen, one present in John’s day, and one still to come. The ten horns represent kings who receive authority for a short time and give their power to the beast. Their purpose is to wage war against the Lamb, but the Lamb triumphs because he is Lord of lords and King of kings.

The waters where the prostitute sits are peoples, multitudes, nations, and languages. Babylon’s influence is worldwide, a one-world religious system tied to the beast. Yet God turns the whole thing around. The beast and the ten kings end up hating the prostitute, ruining her, stripping her, and burning her with fire. God puts it into their hearts to accomplish his purpose, just like he used Pharaoh to display his power at the Red Sea. The enemy is “dumber than a box of rocks,” and God can even use evil rulers to fulfill his plan.

Revelation 17 calls believers to discernment, faithfulness, and steadiness. The shiny thing is not always the true thing. The fruit matters. The Lamb wins, God reigns, and there is nothing to fear for those who belong to Jesus.
