Awake to Righteousness: Generous Giving and Right Standing

Second Corinthians 9 puts giving right where it belongs, not first in the pocket, but first in the heart. The text says sparing sowing brings sparing reaping, and bountiful sowing brings bountiful reaping, but the measure is not the same for every person. God is not impressed with the biggest number as much as He is looking at the heart that is in the giving. The widow’s two mites show that Jesus watched how people gave, and Jesus bragged on the one who gave best, not the one who gave most.

God loves a cheerful giver, one whose heart is in giving, and God is able to make all grace abound toward that kind of person. Second Corinthians says God gives seed to the sower, bread for food, and multiplied seed for sowing, so generosity is not just about an offering bucket. The grace of God enriches the sower in everything so that good works increase, the gospel goes out, the poor are helped, and thanksgiving rises to God.

Psalm 35 calls the cause of God a righteous cause, and that righteous cause requires righteous people who know what God has made them. Romans 1 says the gospel is the power of God unto salvation because in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith. The gospel is not just a warning about sin. The gospel is the good news of who Jesus is, what Jesus has done, and what that means for the one who believes.

Jesus Himself opened the scroll of Isaiah and found His identity and purpose in the Word. The believer cannot live by “you do you, boo,” because that is how so much mess gets made. The Word is the mirror that shows who a person is in Christ, and the church must keep looking into that perfect law of liberty until the image becomes clear.

Ephesians 2 says dead sinners have been made alive, raised up with Christ, and seated together with Him in heavenly places. The prince of the power of the air may still be working in the children of disobedience, but the devil is a defeated chump. The church stands on the revelation of Christ, and the gates of hell cannot prevail against it.

Second Corinthians 5:21 says Christ was made sin so that believers might be made the righteousness of God in Him. Righteousness cannot be earned, bought, or grown into like points on a chart. The believer is righteous in Christ right now, with right standing before the Father, washed in the blood and justified. When that revelation rises like the sun of righteousness, guilt, shame, inferiority, sickness, and bondage lose their grip, and the caged eagle starts remembering it was made to soar.
