Bible ReadingProverbs 5:1–231. My son, be attentive to my wisdom; incline your ear to my understanding,
[01:32] 2. that you may keep discretion, and your lips may guard knowledge.
[01:32] 3. For the lips of a forbidden woman drip honey, and her speech is smoother than oil,
[06:21] 4. but in the end she is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a two-edged sword.
[06:24] 5. Her feet go down to death; her steps follow the path to Sheol;
[06:29] 6. she does not ponder the path of life; her ways wander, and she does not know it.
[06:29] 7. And now, O sons, listen to me, and do not depart from the words of my mouth.
[17:23] 8. Keep your way far from her, and do not go near the door of her house,
[17:27] 9. lest you give your honor to others and your years to the merciless,
[17:32] 10. lest strangers take their fill of your strength, and your labors go to the house of a foreigner,
[17:35] 11. and at the end of your life you groan, when your flesh and body are consumed,
[17:42] 12. and you say, “How I hated discipline, and my heart despised reproof!
[17:42] 13. I did not listen to the voice of my teachers or incline my ear to my instructors.
[17:50] 14. I am at the brink of utter ruin in the assembled congregation.”
[17:54] 15. Drink water from your own cistern, flowing water from your own well.
[29:17] 16. Should your springs be scattered abroad, streams of water in the streets?
[29:24] 17. Let them be for yourself alone, and not for strangers with you.
[29:29] 18. Let your fountain be blessed, and rejoice in the wife of your youth,
[29:34] 19. a lovely deer, a graceful doe. Let her breasts fill you at all times with delight; be intoxicated always in her love.
[29:39] 20. Why should you be intoxicated, my son, with a forbidden woman and embrace the bosom of an adulteress?
[29:46] 21. For a man’s ways are before the eyes of the LORD, and he ponders all his paths.
[14:26] 22. The iniquities of the wicked ensnare him, and he is held fast in the cords of his sin.
23. He dies for lack of discipline, and because of his great folly he is led astray.
Ephesians 5:25–3225. Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her,
[32:55] 26. that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word,
[32:55] 27. so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish.
[32:55] 28. In the same way husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself.
[32:55] 29. For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church,
[32:55] 30. because we are members of his body.
[32:55] 31. “Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.”
[32:55] 32. This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church.
[32:55] 1 Corinthians 1:2424. but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.
[13:29] 2 Corinthians 3:1717. Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.
[40:16] Observation questions- In Proverbs 5:3–6, what contrast is made between the beginning and the end of the forbidden woman’s path? [06:29]
- What instructions does Proverbs 5:7–8 give before it lists the losses that sexual sin can bring?
- According to Proverbs 5:9–14, what are some of the specific things a person may lose or experience after ignoring wisdom and correction? [24:26]
- What positive commands are given in Proverbs 5:15–19, and how do they differ from merely saying “do not commit sexual sin”? [29:59]
Interpretation questions- Proverbs 5 says to stay far from the door of temptation, not merely to resist once a person is already close. What kinds of situations can become “the door” in a person’s life—emotionally, digitally, socially, or physically? [18:18]
- The forbidden path is described as wandering rather than pondering the path of life. How does this show the difference between making choices based only on what feels good now and seeking God’s wisdom for the future? [14:26]
- Proverbs connects sexual sin with loss of honor, strength, labor, health, and peace. Why does hidden sin so often spread beyond the private place where it began? [21:40]
- Ephesians 5 says that marriage points to Christ and the church. How does that truth raise the value of covenant faithfulness and help explain why sexual oneness is more than physical pleasure? [32:55]
Application questions- Where might temptation be getting closer than it should in your life: a private phone habit, social media, a friendship, work conversations, a gym relationship, entertainment, or late-night time alone? What would it look like to move far away from that door this week? [19:36]
- Secrecy often reveals that a person is not truly avoiding temptation. Are there areas of your digital life, messages, browsing, accounts, or devices that you would be ashamed for your spouse, family, or trusted Christian friend to see? What step toward honesty and light is needed? [37:05]
- God’s boundaries are not meant to steal joy but to lead his people into real freedom. Where are you most tempted to see God’s commands as restrictive instead of life-giving? [16:39]
- For those who are married, what are practical ways to “water the grass” of your marriage this week through attention, affection, encouragement, shared time, prayer, or honest conversation? [30:47]
- For those who are single, what boundaries would help you honor Christ and pursue future relationships with wisdom rather than drifting toward compromise?
- Many people carry regret, shame, or fear because of sexual sin—whether recent or long ago. How does the truth that Jesus takes the penalty for sin and gives his purity change the way a believer can respond today? [39:12]
- Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. What could freedom from shame and secrecy look like in one concrete next step: confessing sin to God, asking for help, talking with a trusted believer, seeking counseling, or putting wise safeguards in place? [40:16]
