Authenticity: Living from the Heart in Faith

Summary

In today's reflection, we delve into the profound teachings of Jesus from the Sermon on the Mount, focusing on the importance of the inner life over external appearances. Jesus emphasizes that the true essence of a person is not determined by external actions or how others perceive them, but by the state of their heart and their relationship with God. This is a call to prioritize the unseen, internal aspects of our lives, which are often overshadowed by societal pressures to conform to external standards.

In Matthew chapter 6, Jesus addresses the dangers of living for the approval of others, highlighting the freedom found in secrecy and authenticity. He challenges us to examine our motives in practices like giving, praying, and fasting, urging us to do these acts not for public recognition but as genuine expressions of faith. The concept of hypocrisy is central to this teaching, where Jesus critiques the tendency to present a false exterior while neglecting the inner moral and spiritual life.

Hypocrisy, as Jesus describes, is not merely a discrepancy between words and actions but a deeper issue of the heart. It involves creating a facade to deceive others, masking selfishness and sin with a veneer of righteousness. This is a common struggle, especially for those striving to live a life of faith, as the temptation to appear virtuous can lead to a hollow existence.

To combat this, Jesus invites us to practice goodness in secret, fostering a genuine inner transformation. By doing good without seeking recognition, we align ourselves more closely with God's kingdom, experiencing the joy and freedom of living authentically. This practice helps us shed the masks we wear and embrace a life of integrity and sincerity.

Ultimately, the call is to live in the reality of God's presence, where our worth is not measured by external validation but by the depth of our relationship with Him. This is the path to true freedom and fulfillment, as we learn to live from the inside out, guided by the values of God's kingdom.

Day 1: The Heart's True Measure
The essence of a person is not determined by their external actions or how others perceive them, but by the state of their heart and their relationship with God. Jesus calls us to prioritize our inner spiritual life over outward conformity. This teaching challenges us to look beyond societal pressures and focus on the unseen, internal aspects of our lives. By doing so, we align ourselves with the values of God's kingdom, where true worth is found in our connection with Him. This is a call to live authentically, guided by the depth of our relationship with God rather than the opinions of others. [00:49]

"For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart." (1 Samuel 16:7b, ESV)

Reflection: In what ways have you been prioritizing external appearances over your inner spiritual life? How can you begin to shift your focus to nurture your relationship with God today?

Day 2: Authenticity Over Hypocrisy
Hypocrisy is not just a mismatch between words and actions but a deeper issue of the heart, where we deceive others by presenting a false exterior. Jesus critiques this tendency, urging us to align our inner and outer lives. The temptation to appear virtuous can lead to a hollow existence, masking selfishness and sin with a veneer of righteousness. By embracing authenticity, we can live a life of integrity and sincerity, free from the need to deceive others. This alignment brings us closer to God's kingdom, where our true selves are valued over any facade we might create. [03:19]

"Whoever walks in integrity walks securely, but he who makes his ways crooked will be found out." (Proverbs 10:9, ESV)

Reflection: Consider a situation where you might be presenting a false exterior. What steps can you take to align your inner and outer life, embracing authenticity in your actions and words?

Day 3: The Power of Secret Goodness
Jesus encourages us to practice goodness in secret, fostering genuine inner transformation. By doing good deeds without seeking recognition, we detach from the need for external validation and align more closely with God's kingdom. This practice helps us shed the masks we wear and embrace a life of integrity and sincerity. The joy and freedom found in living authentically are profound, as we experience the true essence of God's presence in our lives. This is a call to live from the inside out, guided by the values of God's kingdom. [10:26]

"But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you." (Matthew 6:3-4, ESV)

Reflection: Think of a good deed you can do today without anyone knowing. How can this act of secret goodness help you grow closer to God and experience His presence more fully?

Day 4: Freedom from Societal Approval
By focusing on the unseen aspects of our lives, we find freedom from the pressures of societal approval. This allows us to live authentically, guided by the values of God's kingdom rather than the opinions of others. Jesus teaches that our worth is not measured by external validation but by the depth of our relationship with Him. This path leads to true freedom and fulfillment, as we learn to live from the inside out. Embracing this freedom enables us to experience the joy and peace that come from living in alignment with God's will. [08:24]

"For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ." (Galatians 1:10, ESV)

Reflection: Identify an area in your life where you seek societal approval. How can you shift your focus to seek God's approval instead, and what changes might this bring to your daily life?

Day 5: Living in the Reality of God's Presence
The ultimate goal is to live in the reality of God's presence, where our worth is determined by our relationship with Him. This path leads to true freedom and fulfillment, as we learn to live from the inside out. By prioritizing our inner spiritual life, we align ourselves with the values of God's kingdom, experiencing the joy and peace that come from living authentically. Quotes

outside you have two parts you have an inside and you have an outside and which part you prioritize determines the person that you will come and this is all part of the teaching of Jesus the greatest talk ever given in the sermon of the mount he says what is insurmountable in this world are not the problems you face not even the internal Brokenness and sin it is the presence of God in his kingdom his work that he's right here and you could be his friend [00:23:35]

now the assumption is that practices he's going to talk about here giving and praying and fasting we will continue to do but when you give don't announce it with trumpets in the synagogues and street corners the way the Hypocrites do and that word's going to be very important in the sermon in the mount and so we got to talk about that today it's the opposite of we've looked at how Jesus is concerned about goodness at the level of the heart now that's the Unseen part of you and we'll see over and over again in chapter six Jesus keeps talking about what is done in secret what is unseen [01:21:56]

there is an unseen reality we live in a world has tries to convince people that you don't have an inside there are books by neurologists like you are your brain that says we are just atoms molecules strings quirks that's all that there is or a book WR re written recently by a Stanford Propet deter that says there's no such thing as agency no such thing as free will it's just physicalism all the way down basically there is no inside as Jesus talked about but but Jesus is quite clear on this no there is an inside and it's the inside that matters most [02:01:12]

hypocrisy we often think of hypocrisy as being the case when somebody says one thing and does something else one of the most famous 20th century novels about a hypocritical preacher was Elmer Gantry he's very flamboyant character not fully unsympathetic but he would preach about Fidelity but the then he himself was quite promiscuous would preach about generosity and honesty but he himself would uh steal money and be quite greedy so there was a gap between what he said he believed what he actually did that's not exactly the kind of hypocrisy that Jesus says is our greatest danger [02:41:04]

and folks have pointed out those two categories scribes and Pharisees scribes of course to inscribe those people who are literate those are teachers of the law that are able to read and write and they're very concerned with interpreting the law and in many ways what Jesus goes on to talk about in chapter five addresses the problem of the scribes they their their interpretation law was long as you don't commit adultery you're good in that one long as you don't commit murder you're good on that one long as you fulfill your Oaths and Jesus said no no no it's about the heart not just superficial Conformity to a uh minimalist view of the law [04:23:04]

hypocrisy is not just that hypocrisy is when there's something wrong on the inside and then in addition not only am I selfish I try to convince you that I am not selfish I Engineer the way that I look to add deception to Ego selfishness and other forms of sin so for example in Matthew chapter 23 where Jesus really goes to town on this he says in verse five this is a probing analysis of the problem of hypocrisy he says about these hypocritical religious leaders everything they do is for others to see and know [07:38:00]

and my life becomes very Hollow on the inside because I'm trying to make it look good on the outside see if somebody's selfish but you know they're selfish then uh at least you know what you're dealing with when deception gets added to it uh then you you're not even allowed to see reality and that's what's going on with religious hypocrisy Jesus says wo to you teachers of the laws and phares you Hypocrites you clean the outside of the cup and dish but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence [08:34:00]

blind Pharisee first clean the inside of the cone wo to you teachers of Law and Pharisees you Hypocrites you are like whitewashed tombs which look beautiful on the outside but inside are full of the bones of the Dead no wonder they kill this man in the same way on the outside you appear to people as righteous but inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness now why would you bother to whitewash a Tom you would do that in order to try to convince people that there was life on the inside but there wasn't life on the inside [09:01:00]

it's just still given the somebody now now I've told you all those things so I have lost my reward why would I do that well uh cuz the truth is even when I did those things my left hand knew exactly what my right hand was doing and I say well I'm doing pretty good stuff right now but maybe someday I'll get to the point where my left hand doesn't know I'd be really good at that's the person in my best self I want to be so today no mask as best I can I will try not to let people know except for this of course uh the good things that I have done [11:30:00]
