Sermon Summary

Jesus begins the conversation in Samaria, the place Jewish travelers normally went out of their way to avoid. Samaria stands between Judea and Galilee, but the division between Jews and Samaritans ran much deeper than geography. Jesus crosses that boundary to meet a sinful, unclean, outcast Samaritan woman with grace and truth.

The woman raises the old fight over worship: Mount Gerizim or Mount Zion, Samaritan worship or Jewish worship. Jesus refuses to settle the debate on its old terms. Worship, then, is no empty ritual or obligation; it is life before the living God, in spirit and in truth.
