2nd Aug am - If they only knew!

John 4 begins with that little line that Jesus “had to pass through Samaria,” and that little line carries the weight of his purpose. Jesus was not simply taking the quickest route. Jesus was not in a rush, because he stayed there for days. Jesus had to go because there was a woman there who needed rescued, and because the Samaritans, those long lost cousins of the Jews, were included in his saving purpose.

Jesus comes to the well tired, drained, genuinely thirsty, and yet he is there waiting for someone else’s thirst. The woman comes at noon, on her own, likely used, abused, forgotten, bullied, and carrying a story full of pain and bad decisions. Her thirst is physical, relational, and spiritual. Jesus speaks first, crossing the barriers that others would have used as reasons to avoid her.

Living water is the gift Jesus offers. Jacob’s well can give water for a time, but everyone who drinks that water will be thirsty again. Jesus gives water that becomes a spring inside a person, welling up to eternal life. This living water is the Spirit, poured into the heart, giving life, love, power, fruit, and the ability to walk the Jesus way.

Jesus knows the woman entirely. His command to call her husband is loaded, because he already knows the whole painful truth. He knows the five husbands, and he knows the man she is with now is not her husband. Yet Jesus is still inviting her, not because sin does not matter, but because broken people need the doctor. His love does not leave stagnant water untouched. His compassion calls for repentance, for the old pattern of destruction to be left behind.

Jesus removes every imagined barrier. Her shame is not too great. Her background as a Samaritan is not too far away. Her wrong worship and confused history do not keep him from offering life. The Father is seeking worshipers in spirit and truth, and Jesus himself is the truth who gives the Spirit.

Jesus also gives his people an example to follow. The harvest is plentiful, and there are still thirsty people trying to drink from relationships, substances, lifestyles, philosophies, and other empty wells. The work of the Father is food for the soul. When Christians step out to share the good news, God’s power is seen, and people discover that Jesus has been waiting for them too.
