Audience of One (August 16, 2026)

Luke 12:1-12 begins with a crowd of thousands, but Jesus pulls His disciples close and tells them to be on guard against the yeast of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. The yeast image shows how something small can work its way through the whole loaf. Hypocrisy starts small too. It starts when people begin managing an image, hiding what is true, and caring more about being accepted by people than being transformed by God.

The mask becomes the picture for all the versions people perform depending on the audience. The mask may contain real pieces of a person, but it cannot show the full person. The problem comes when maintaining the appearance matters more than letting God deal with what is underneath: jealousy, addiction, fear, greed, doubt, shame, and the need to belong. God already sees behind the mask, so the performance is never really for Him. The real question becomes, whose approval is a person living for?

Fear often sits underneath the mask. Fear of rejection, exclusion, losing a relationship, losing an opportunity, disappointing somebody, or being judged can make people compromise. Human systems, authorities, bosses, crowds, and relationships do have power to take things away. Yet Jesus does not pretend that human power is ultimate. People may hurt, exclude, punish, and even kill the body, but their power has limits.

Jesus calls His disciples to reorder their fear. God alone holds ultimate authority, and He is rightly feared. Yet the God who deserves reverence is also the God who does not forget a sparrow and knows every hair on a person’s head. God is personal and powerful. His care does not minimize His authority, and His authority does not cancel His care. The healthy fear of God frees people from unhealthy fear of man because, when God’s opinion matters most, everybody else’s opinion loses its ultimate power.

Jesus also prepares His followers for moments when their allegiance will be tested. The Holy Spirit will teach them what to say when they stand before rulers and authorities. Christ did not die so people could become better performers. Christ died so they could be fully known and fully loved. The goal is not getting better at wearing the mask, but becoming secure enough in God’s love to lay it down and live in congruence with the image of God.
