Sin is not a word many people want to talk about, but Scripture will not let anyone water it down. Romans says that all have sinned and fallen short of God’s glory, and sin is more than mistakes, bad habits, or a list of things people should stop doing. Sin is rebellion against God. Sin breaks fellowship with the God who is holy, perfect, loving, and worthy of all praise.
Romans 1 shows the root of sin. Humanity suppresses the truth, refuses to honor God, refuses to give thanks, and exchanges the truth of God for a lie. Adam and Eve exchanged the word of God for the serpent’s lie because they wanted to be like God. The human heart does the same thing whenever it treasures anything above the Creator. Sin is failure to treasure God above all things. Sin is the glory of God not honored, the beauty of God not treasured, the grace of God not cherished, and the person of God not loved.
Paul makes the situation clear: no one is righteous, no one seeks God, and no one does good apart from Christ. Sin leaves humanity spiritually dead, enslaved, blind, unclean, guilty, alienated, and trapped in a pit. The flesh cannot fix the flesh. Good deeds may look good in society, but no work can make a sinner right before a holy God.
The gospel becomes glorious only when sin is seen for what it is. Christ died for the ungodly while they were powerless, sinful, and enemies of God. God did not leave dead people to make themselves alive. Christ calls sinners out of the grave like Lazarus and gives them life. Christianity is not people trying to find their way back to God. Christianity is God’s rescue mission, sending his Son to save helpless people.
God’s forgiveness does not mean God ignores sin or brushes it under the rug. God’s justice requires that sin be paid for. Christ bore sin in his body on the cross, and the wrath sinners deserved fell upon him. Forgiveness comes only because Jesus paid the debt in full.
The forgiveness of sins means restoration to God, adoption into his family, canceled debt, justification in God’s courtroom, freedom from wrath, new life by the Spirit, and everlasting life with God. Jesus calls the poor in spirit, those who know they are spiritually broke, to come and receive the kingdom of heaven.

Key Takeaways
- 1. Sin is failure to treasure God Sin goes deeper than outward behavior. The heart rejects God’s rule when it places self, comfort, pleasure, approval, or any created thing above him. Repentance is not merely cleaning up actions; repentance is returning to God as the treasure of the heart. [48:05]
- 2. The flesh cannot save the flesh Humanity cannot earn salvation because every attempt at self-righteousness comes from a heart still bent away from God. Good works become truly good only when Christ lives and works through his people by the Spirit. Grace does not improve spiritual deadness; grace makes the dead alive. [51:58]
- 3. Christ died for helpless enemies The gospel is not good advice for people who are mostly okay. Christ came for the broken, lost, guilty, and powerless, for those who know they cannot climb out of the pit. God’s love shines brightest because Christ died while sinners were still sinners. [59:13]
- 4. Forgiveness required Christ’s blood God remains perfectly just because sin was not overlooked. Christ bore sin in his own body, received its punishment, and fulfilled the righteous requirement of God’s law. Salvation can never be earned because Jesus paid what no sinner could pay. [65:25]
- 5. Forgiveness brings complete restoration God does not merely tolerate forgiven sinners from a distance. Christ restores them to God, brings them into the Father’s family, cancels their debt, and gives them everlasting life. The believer’s hope rests in what Christ has finished, not in what the flesh can accomplish.
