#DontRateGodMedium
“``But from cover to cover, the Bible seems to be contending that it is possible to be in a relationship with the God who made us, the most inherently lovely being in the universe, the most perfect person who's ever been and still end up struggling and apathetic in our affection for him. I'll put it this way. If the inherent loveliness of the object of our love were enough maintain our affections, God would be the one. But the dangerous thing about our hearts is that we can stand before God and rate him medium, not because he is, but because we've allowed ourselves to be deceived by our own apathy.”

#WarmHeartedFaith
“Tepid affection for God is insulting to him just like it is for us. Many of you here this morning are are maybe just exploring Christianity, considering it. And to me, this aspect of our faith, the Christian faith is surprisingly authentic. It's encouragingly authentic. God is not looking for a bunch of rule following automata. That's not what he's after. He wants a genuine warm hearted relationship with you just like you want with other people. Obedience does matter. Walking in his ways does matter, but God wants our hearts. He he wants us to love him in ever increasing approximation of his demonstrated infinite love for us.”

#NoLukewarmLove
“None of us looks at a tepid relationship and says, I want that when I grow up. Whether you're single or married, whether you want to be married or don't, if you see an older couple who is still obviously, deeply devoted to each other, still passionately in love with each other, though it looks very different than when they were teenagers, we think, yeah, that's what it's meant to be like. None of us who are following Jesus, and I'm not assuming that we all have made that commitment yet, none of us started out thinking, I wanna do the rest of my days with a lukewarm love for Jesus.”

#RiskOfSpiritualApathy
“I'm not worried about that little girl. I'm pretty sure that by now, a decade later on, she has overcome her apathy, and she will see the glory of old faithful for what it is. But my sense is that you and I the risk of a far more sinister apathy in our own lives. it possible that we could have a living relationship with the one true God of the universe? The one who died on a cross in order to redeem us and wake up one day rating that glory medium. I think it is possible. And as we'll see in our teaching text today, we would not be the first to succumb to that risk.”
