An Anchor for my soul

Hebrews 6 holds out the promises of God as “an anchor of the soul,” sure and steadfast because God cannot lie. God did not merely give Abraham a word. God swore by Himself, putting His own unchanging counsel behind the promise. The promise gives strong consolation to people who have fled for refuge and laid hold of hope in Christ behind the veil.

Abraham shows what that kind of faith looks like in real life. God told a seventy-five-year-old business guy to pack his camels and go, without giving him the whole map. Abraham believed God even when he did not understand, and that belief was counted as righteousness. Faith does not need every detail filled in before it obeys.

The waiting tested Abraham and Sarah hard. Twenty-three and twenty-four years passed, and the natural facts got louder: old bodies, no child, no visible way forward. Abraham laughed. Sarah laughed. Their attempt to help God along through Hagar brought Ishmael, but their failure did not cancel God’s promise to Isaac. God remained God, even when they had messed it up.

The question in Genesis 18 still stands: “Is there anything too hard for the Lord?” Age does not limit God, whether a person is fourteen like David or nearly one hundred like Abraham and Sarah. Money, a job, family ties, a past, fear, and a lack of understanding can all become natural things that cloud faith. The promise calls believers away from walking the fence and into trusting the God who can supply, save, heal, lead, and send.

Psalm 32:8 gives a personal picture of a life promise: “I will lead you and teach you in the way you should go.” God’s leading may require leaving a place before the next place is clear. God’s warning against becoming like a horse or mule shows that ministry can keep its outward motions while the presence of God is no longer close. Christ calls His people to stop running, get close enough to feel His breath, and let His word lead them.

Hebrews 11 says Sarah received strength because she judged Him faithful who had promised. Faith is not confidence in a person’s own ability to make something happen. Faith judges God faithful. The cloud of witnesses calls the church to hold on, walk it out, and remember that all the promises of God in Jesus are yes and amen.
