Honesty Before God: Lessons from Ananias and Sapphira

Acts first sets Paul and Silas in prison with their backs beaten and their bodies locked up, but their mouths still praying and praising. The prison shakes, the chains fall off, the doors open, and yet nobody runs. The opened doors show that the presence of God had filled the place so deeply that the prisoners stayed with what every soul had been chasing all along. God becomes the “fulfillment factor,” the answer beneath every addiction, ambition, pressure, and empty success. The song says it plainly: “All I need is in you.”

Acts then turns to another kind of worship, the giving of possessions at the apostles’ feet. Barnabas sells land and brings the money freely, as a son of encouragement giving with a clean heart. Jesus’ encounter with the rich young ruler stands behind the moment: to inherit the eternal, the temporal cannot remain the thing that defines a person. Earthly coinage has to give way to heavenly treasure.

Ananias and Sapphira step into that holy space pretending to bring a whole offering while holding back part of the proceeds. Peter does not treat the problem as bad accounting. Peter names the real issue: Satan has filled the heart to lie to the Holy Spirit. The possession was theirs before it was sold, and the money was theirs after it was sold. The sin was not keeping money. The sin was pretending, conspiring, and trying to get the glory of sacrifice without the obedience of sacrifice.

Joshua’s story of hidden loot after Jericho and Saul’s failure with the Amalekites show the same old issue. God has always been the same God, gracious and patient, but also righteous and clear. Holy things cannot be handled like personal trophies. God calls, God warns, and God loves enough to tell the truth.

The little James Taylor cassette becomes a plain and funny picture of the same reality. The issue was not mainly the artist or the songs. The issue was what had begun to own the heart. When God says to break something, stop something, confess something, or lay something down, the size of the thing is not the point. The voice of the Holy Spirit is the point.

Ananias falls dead, and Sapphira later repeats the lie and falls dead too. Great fear comes on the church and on everyone who hears. That fear is not cruelty. That fear is mercy, because no game can be played with God. The call is simple and serious: do not violate the voice of the Holy Spirit, confess what needs confessing, and leave the conspiracy at God’s feet.
