Abundant life is the life Jesus promised in John 10:10, but that life is not magic. Jesus came to give “life to the full,” a rich and meaningful life, yet that promise gets twisted when Christianity gets treated like a supernatural shortcut around irresponsibility. God still does miracles. God still makes a way. But God does not wave a wand over a marriage, a budget, a body, or a soul that refuses maturity. God wants to build the kingdom in a life, not just for a person, but with that person and through that person.

The Christian life is not goosebumps in a worship service. Abundant life is practical, ordered, and deeply spiritual at the same time. Healthy relationships matter because Jesus said the greatest commandment is love for God and the second is love for others. Meaning and purpose matter because success without a bigger story eventually becomes, “So what?” Physical and mental health matter because the body is the temple of the Holy Spirit. Gratitude matters because entitlement cannot carry joy. Financial stability matters because constant pressure steals peace. Integrity matters because choices that do not line up with values will eat away at the soul.

Misdirected desire is what pulls those areas out of order. Pain and desire, when carried anywhere but to Jesus, start driving bad behavior. God wants to heal the pain, satisfy the desire, and lead a person into maturity. Parenting gives the picture. Parents cannot hand a child happiness, but they can help put that child on a path toward maturity. God parents his people the same way.

The whole Bible tells that story. Genesis begins with God creating paradise and telling Adam and Eve to be fruitful, multiply, and exercise dominion. Revelation ends with paradise restored, not with saints floating around on clouds, but with God’s people building his kingdom for all eternity. God’s plan has always been kingdom work with his people and through his people.

The path begins with surrender. Surrender rests on the goodness of God, proven in Christ, who died while sinners were still shaking a fist in God’s face. Surrender then bows to Scripture, because the Bible teaches, rebukes, corrects, and trains. Scripture is a mirror that shows the mess so the mess can be cleaned up. Surrender also listens to the Holy Spirit, who lives inside the believer as counselor, helper, and presence. Surrender finally receives the church as a gift, because independent decisions often become the dumbest decisions. God wants ears cleaned out, hearts humbled, and lives brought into order so abundant life can actually be built.

So, the Christian life isn't magic and the reason a lot of people would say it didn't work is because somehow we gave them the impression that they would come to church, if they would say a prayer, if they would sing with passion, then God would magically fix their irresponsibility and God does not work that way.”

“In fact, there's an interesting verse in James chapter one where James says, lay aside all moral filth and humbly accept the word of god which is able to save your soul. Listen to this. The word for moral filth has the same root as earwax. In other words, James is saying, the moral filth, our rebellion keeps us from hearing God and we've got to clean out our ears so that we can hear the voice of God which has the power to save our soul. Whoo. What a great verse. See, God wants you to have abundant life. He wants to bless you, Which means he's inviting you to follow him and grow and mature as a follower of Jesus so that you can bring your life into order. And in order to do that, we gotta surrender to God, to surrender to scripture, to surrender to the Holy Spirit, to surrender to spiritual authority. God's given us these tools to lead us into maturity so that we can have abundant life. Ain't that good?”

We surrender. Listen, not because we're supposed to, not because we're thinking, boy, if we get out of line, God's up there and he's gonna zap us. surrender because that's what's best for me. If I do it by myself, I'm only hurting myself. The rules aren't for god. They're for me. Right?”

“There's pain and suffering in our world because Adam and Eve turned away from god and they brought pain and suffering. They brought hell into god's creation and on a micro level for you too, you get to decide, am I gonna follow Jesus and build the kingdom of God, build heaven in my life, which is preparing me for eternity, or am I gonna choose independence, move away from God, and actually, without knowing it, actually build hell in my life, which is also preparing me for a very different eternity? We all get to decide which path to take. So, it begins with this conviction that our god is good, that he's generous, that we can trust him.”
