The image of a donkey trapped in a hole, shaking off every shovelful of dirt to climb higher, mirrors how believers can transform attacks into ascent. Hardship meant to bury us becomes foothold when we refuse passive despair. Each trial shakes off bitterness, pride, or self-pity, leaving resolve to rise. What others intend for harm, God repurposes as training ground for resilience. Victory comes not by avoiding the dirt but using it to reach higher ground. [01:10:34]

Romans 8 stands in the middle of storms and says, “All things work for good to those who love God and are called according to his purpose.” God’s people may come into the house with questions, pain, delay, disappointment, bad news, and prayers that look like heaven did not answer. The presence of the Lord is already in the place, and God does not gather his people in vain. God prepares a table even in the presence of enemies, so there is something for the hurting soul.

The question of “why” rises when life does not go the way it was expected to go. Job knew that question after losing everything, after friends first comforted him and then accused him, after even his wife wondered why he still held on to God. The “why” question can be honest, like David’s cry in Psalm 22 and Jesus’ cry on the cross, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” The “why” question can also turn cynical and proud, like the thief on the cross demanding that Jesus prove himself.

Romans 8 gives good news in the middle of that confusion. God is working for good, and nothing can separate those in Christ from the love of God. The promise is not a cheap sentence thrown at somebody in pain. Romans 8:28 has a condition: all things work for good for those who love God and are called according to his purpose.

God’s purpose is not merely to make people happy campers. Jeremiah 29 says God has plans to prosper, not to harm, to give hope and a future. God knew his people before they were formed, and Christ went to the cross with salvation already in the mind of God.

God’s provision rests on the gift of his Son. If God did not spare Jesus, God will graciously give what is needed according to his will. God’s protection holds firm, because trouble, distress, persecution, famine, nakedness, death, life, powers, height, depth, and anything else in creation cannot separate Christ’s own from his love.

Adversity is not the end of the story. The old donkey in the hole shook off the dirt and stepped up until what was meant to bury him became the way out. God can take the dirt thrown by the enemy and turn it into a stepping stone for the next assignment. The story is not finished until Jesus is seen face to face.
