Growing Older, Remaining Rooted and Fruitful in Christ

Psalm 92 gives an encouraging word for every believer who is getting older. Growing old happens naturally, because nobody can stop the calendar or turn back the hands of the clock. Growing cold, though, is a matter of the heart. God never says that old age means spiritual retirement. As long as God gives breath, God still gives purpose, and the righteous “shall still bring forth fruit in old age.”

The psalm pictures the righteous like palm trees and cedars of Lebanon. Palm trees survive difficult conditions, and cedars stand for strength, stability, and endurance. God desires more than a life that burns bright for a little while and disappears. God desires a life that is rooted, established, strong, and fruitful through every season.

Psalm 92 says those planted in the house of the Lord shall flourish. A plant that is always pulled up and moved around cannot put down strong roots. The church needs believers who stay connected to God and to God’s people. A body may become unable to sit in a pew, but a heart can still be planted in the things of God. At the same time, a person can sit in the same pew every week while the heart has taken root somewhere else. God looks at the heart.

God uses faithful older believers to encourage the younger generation. A life that keeps worshiping through sickness, grief, disappointment, and hard news says something powerful. Children, grandchildren, and younger Christians watch how believers pray, trust God, and keep going through valleys. A faithful life is already preaching a message.

Psalm 1 joins this picture by showing a tree planted by rivers of water. The strength seen above ground comes from roots nobody can see. God’s Word must feed the heart today, not merely through memories of what God did years ago. Yesterday’s blessings encourage, but they cannot replace today’s walk with God. The Bible that strengthened a believer at twenty five can still strengthen that believer at sixty five. God’s truth has not changed, even when feelings, circumstances, people, and bodies do change.

Psalm 92 promises fruitfulness until heaven. Service may change, but usefulness does not have to end. Prayer, encouragement, wisdom, counsel, generosity, testimony, and a faithful example may become the fruit of later years. Caleb, at eighty five, still said, “Give me this mountain.” God may still have mountains to climb through prayer, faithfulness, and passing truth to the next generation. The greatest question is not how many birthdays a person has had, but whether that person knows Jesus Christ as Savior. Christ alone saves, restores cold hearts, and keeps His people faithful to the end.
