Wherever you are today—at home, at work, or in a pew—you are already standing on holy ground. Everything is spiritual because there is no place on earth where God’s presence is not. Take a slow breath, let your shoulders drop, and allow your heart to soften to the nearness of the One who is absolutely crazy about you. You do not have to go somewhere else to meet God; you only need to become present to the Presence who is already with you. Let this awareness turn your ordinary moments into a sanctuary of grace and calm [14:02]
Psalm 139:7–10
Where could I escape from your Spirit or get away from your presence? If I climb to the highest heights, you are there; if I sink to the lowest depths, you are still with me. If I race on morning’s wings to the farthest horizon, your hand will guide me and your strong grip will hold me steady.
Reflection: What ordinary place—like your commute, break room, or living room—will you treat as sacred this week, and what simple habit could help you notice God there?
This week’s pink candle whispers, “Keep going.” It doesn’t deny the dark; it announces that light is close and coming. Let the light you receive from those you love spill over toward the one who is hard for you to love. Christ’s light does not run out; it refracts through you, bathing even difficult faces with unexpected grace. Hold fast to hope: the darkness is real, but it will not have the final word [28:38]
Isaiah 9:2
People who have been walking under the weight of night have begun to see a great light; for those living in deep shadow, daybreak has touched them.
Reflection: Who is one person you struggle to love, and what is one specific act—prayer, kindness, or restraint—you could offer them this week as a sign of light?
Repentance is not shame; it is liberation. It is the grace-filled awareness that your life is playing out of tune with God’s music—and then choosing to retune and turn around. Ancestry, pedigree, or spiritual credentials cannot substitute for a life that bears good fruit. God invites you to face the right direction today and take the next faithful step, however small. Turn toward the One who baptizes with the Holy Spirit and fire, and let your life sing again [59:37]
Matthew 3:1–12
John showed up in the wilderness calling people to turn around because God’s reign was near. Crowds confessed and were baptized, but he warned the religious elite that heritage couldn’t save them; their lives needed to show real change. He said, “I wash with water, but someone greater is coming who will immerse you in the Spirit and holy fire,” and he pictured the Coming One separating what is fruitful from what is empty, gathering the grain and clearing away the waste.
Reflection: Where do you sense you’re out of tune with God’s dream, and what one concrete change will you make this week to face the right direction?
We cannot always take away pain, but we can refuse to let anyone carry it alone. When tragedy strikes next door or grief sits in your own pew, the body of Christ moves toward the ache with prayer, presence, and practical care. A simple card, a delivered meal, a quiet visit, or a whispered prayer says, “We see you, and we are with you.” Hope becomes believable when it arrives in community, one act of grace at a time. This is how light shows up in the darkest places [39:42]
1 Corinthians 12:26–27
If one part of the body hurts, the whole body feels it; if one part is honored, everyone shares the joy. You together are Christ’s body, and each person is a needed member.
Reflection: Whose pain in your neighborhood or church are you aware of right now, and what small act of solidarity could you offer this week?
Your very existence is a miracle; God has placed a spark of the divine in you. You carry the light of Christ, and you are entrusted to build a kingdom of grace, love, mercy, and joy—right here, right now. There is no plan B; amazingly, God believes you can do this together. Though the call is daunting, it is also thrilling: produce good fruit, shine gently, and pray with gratitude. As you do, God’s peace will steady your heart and mind [55:08]
Philippians 4:4–7
Keep choosing joy in the Lord; let your kindness be obvious to everyone because the Lord is close. Don’t be consumed by worry; bring everything to God with thankful prayers. Then God’s peace—beyond what our minds can figure out—will stand guard over your heart and thoughts in Christ.
Reflection: What is one tangible way you will help build God’s kingdom of grace, love, mercy, and joy in the next seven days, and who will you invite to join you?
Advent invites us to slow down, breathe, and become aware of a God who is already here—closer than our own breath and absolutely crazy about us. Today I named the pink candle as our encourager: it acknowledges the real darkness of this season and still whispers, “Keep going. Light is coming.” Together, we practiced noticing that light—first as it shines from someone we love and then, with courage, as it refracts over someone we struggle to love. Advent isn’t waiting for Jesus to arrive; it is training our eyes and hearts to see the Christ who has already arrived, in the world and in each person.
We also named the darkness around us. Our community is grieving the horror at the German Apartments. We cannot fully know that pain, but we can be the kind of people who show up, who mourn with those who mourn, and who offer hope and presence when answers fail. That is part of embodying Advent—letting love take on flesh through us.
From Matthew 3, John the Baptist pushes us beyond pedigree and religious comfort. He doesn’t care whose child you are; he wants to know what fruit your life bears. Repentance isn’t mere apology—it’s awareness that we’re out of tune with God’s song and the decision to retune and turn around. That can feel overwhelming when we face the big, systemic sins of our age, but sacred people are called to more than remorse. We’re called to realignment and action.
I reminded us that the odds of you being you are astronomically small. Your existence is not an accident; it’s a wonder. You carry a spark of the divine. God’s startling plan to renew the world has no Plan B—it’s us. That’s daunting and deeply hopeful. The pink candle stands in the middle of it all and says, “Keep going.” Believe in God, yes—and also know that God believes in us. May we turn toward love, produce good fruit, and build God’s kingdom right here, right now.
Imagine particles of light emanating from that person. Let your memory move to an encounter when you felt this love and light extended from them to you. And now, imagine the refracted light showering them as if a prism has just lit up the surface of the walls and their own skin. As you see this scene, let their face fade and change. And in their place, for just a moment, see someone that you struggle to love. And if you can, let that same reflection of light emanate and shower this person as well. This is difficult. But remember the promise of the third candle. You can do it. Keep going.

While I certainly question John's methods, there are a few things that I think John the Baptist is spot on about. John seems to understand this idea that it is not your pedigree,it is not your family tree that God cares about. It's who you are. Who you are. It's not who your dad is. It's not who your mom is. It's who you are.

John even says, and I love this because it's ancient sarcasm, and if there's one thing I know and love, it's sarcasm, both from ancient, from the ancient Near East and today. It's ancient sarcasm. He says, don't think that you have this get-out-of-jail free card because Abraham is your ancestor. God can make descendants out of these rocks if that's what was needed. John is saying, and saying to us thousands of years later, you're not special because of your pedigree. You're special because of who you are.

You're special not because of who your mom or your dad is. You're special because you produce fruit. You produce fruit that will be used in the kingdom of God. You're special when you feel as though you're not going the right way, when you're walking away from the direction that God would have you walk. You're special when you turn around. You're special when you repent. There is no do you know who my father is in the kingdom of God. There is no do you know who my mother is in the kingdom of God. There's only what fruit are we producing? You and I. What fruit are we producing?

It's the realization that we understand that we're not doing things the way God would have us do them. Repentance then is our awareness that we're out of step with God. That if God was a song repentance is the realization that we are out of tune with the song. That we're playing our instrument but we're somehow out of tune. That's what repentance is.

In fact, in fact, that's God's plan and there's no plan B.there's no backup. It's up to you and it's up to me to build God's kingdom of grace, love, mercy, and joy. It's up to us to build that kingdom here and there is no plan B. But we're sacred people. We're sacred people and we can do it. If there's hope for a brood of vipers, there's hope for us as well.

What if we realized and acted as such? What if we realized that God believes in us so deeply that God would invite us to build God's kingdom right here on earth? What if we believed that we were sacred people and that God is looking to us to share and show God's love throughout the world? What an awesome responsibility.

My friends, do you know how relatively impossible it is for you to be you? Do not for a moment tell me that you're not sacred. Everything about you is sacred. There is a one in over 400 quadrillion chance that you exist. Do not tell me for a minute that you have nothing to offer. You have everything to offer. You have everything to offer. You can be light in this world just like this candle reminds us. You carry God's light with you. Don't tell me for a minute that you have nothing to offer. You have the most important thing to offer.
