Bible reading Acts 12:1-16 (ESV) ¹About that time Herod the king laid violent hands on some who belonged to the church. ²He killed James the brother of John with the sword, ³and when he saw that it pleased the Jews, he proceeded to arrest Peter also. This was during the days of Unleavened Bread. ⁴And when he had seized him, he put him in prison, delivering him over to four squads of soldiers to guard him, intending after the Passover to bring him out to the people. ⁵So Peter was kept in prison, but earnest prayer for him was made to God by the church. ⁶Now when Herod was about to bring him out, on that very night, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains, and sentries before the door were guarding the prison. ⁷And behold, an angel of the Lord stood next to him, and a light shone in the cell. He struck Peter on the side and woke him, saying, “Get up quickly.” And the chains fell off his hands. ⁸And the angel said to him, “Dress yourself and put on your sandals.” And he did so. And he said to him, “Wrap your cloak around you and follow me.” ⁹And he went out and followed him. He did not know that what was being done by the angel was real, but thought he was seeing a vision. ¹⁰When they had passed the first and the second guard, they came to the iron gate leading into the city. It opened for them of its own accord, and they went out and went along one street, and immediately the angel left him. ¹¹When Peter came to himself, he said, “Now I am sure that the Lord has sent his angel and rescued me from the hand of Herod and from all that the Jewish people were expecting.” ¹²When he realized this, he went to the house of Mary, the mother of John whose other name was Mark, where many were gathered together and were praying. ¹³And when he knocked at the door of the gateway, a servant girl named Rhoda came to answer. ¹⁴Recognizing Peter’s voice, in her joy she did not open the gate but ran in and reported that Peter was standing at the gate. ¹⁵They said to her, “You are out of your mind.” But she kept insisting that it was so, and they kept saying, “It is his angel!” ¹⁶But Peter continued knocking, and when they opened, they saw him and were amazed.
Observation questions - What specific details does the passage give about Peter’s imprisonment and the level of security surrounding him?
- How did the people praying at Mary’s house respond when Rhoda told them Peter was at the door?
- What was the angel’s specific sequence of instructions to Peter inside the prison cell?
Interpretation questions - The church was praying earnestly for Peter, yet they were astonished when he was freed. What does this suggest about the difference between the words of their prayer and the actual faith in their hearts? [19:04]
- Why might God have chosen to free Peter through a miraculous, supernatural means like an angel, rather than through a more ordinary or political process?
- The servant girl, Rhoda, believed immediately upon hearing Peter’s voice, while the adults inside did not. What might this reveal about what can sometimes hinder “seasoned” believers from recognizing answered prayer? [24:01]
Application questions - Prayer without real faith becomes a rhythm with no results. [10:09] Is there a specific situation you’ve been praying about but deep down, you don’t truly expect God to change it? What would it look like to pray for that situation with genuine expectation this week?
- Readiness to receive often separates amazement from acceptance. [13:53] Can you recall a time when God answered a prayer in a way you didn’t expect, and you almost missed it? How can you cultivate a heart that is more prepared to receive God’s answers, even when they look different than you imagined?
- If you are in need of a great prayer answer, make sure you ask for a prayer warrior that can get things done. [30:28] Who in your life is a faithful, believing intercessor you can turn to when you have a desperate need? What is it about their life and walk with God that makes them credible?
- They were all praying for the same thing for the same person. Not a one of them believed it. [29:57] How does this story challenge the common idea that the number of people praying is more important than the faith of those praying? In what areas of your life do you need to move from hoping to truly believing?
- God works when we work. When we stop working, God stops. [34:25] What is one practical “step of faith” you can take this week that demonstrates you are preparing to receive what you’ve been asking God for?
