The Lord Will Provide: Abraham's Test of Faith

Genesis 22 starts with a hard word: God tested Abraham. The story does not pretend that this is easy. The command to take Isaac, the son Abraham waited twenty five years for, the son he loved, and offer him on a mountain raises the real question, “Why, God?” But the text names it from the beginning as a test, not as God approving child sacrifice. That was the way of the nations around Abraham, but it was never the nature of Yahweh.

Abraham’s life had already been shaped by God’s call into uncomfortable places. God had told him to leave what was good and safe because what God had for him was better. Abraham had seen God provide through unknown lands, kings, mistakes, impatience, and even the painful mess with Ishmael. Abraham’s faith had learned, step after step, that when God’s plan could not be traced, God’s heart could still be trusted.

The three-day journey to Moriah slows the story down. Every step carries the weight of Isaac, the promised child, the one through whom the covenant was supposed to continue. Isaac carries the wood, notices the missing lamb, and asks the question hanging over the whole scene. Abraham answers with the deepest word he has: “God himself will provide the lamb.” That answer is not cheap optimism. It is the voice of a man who does not know how God will show up, but knows God will show up.

The altar, the wood, the binding, and the knife bring the test to the edge of the unthinkable. Then the angel of the Lord shouts from heaven and stops Abraham’s hand. The ram is already there, caught in the thicket. The Lord had provided before Abraham saw it. The place receives its name: “The Lord will provide.”

Mount Moriah carries the story forward. The ram in the thorns points to the Son with the crown of thorns. The beloved son on the wood points to Jesus, the one and only Son given for the life of the world. Abraham did not finally have to sacrifice Isaac, because God would one day provide the Lamb himself. Eternal life requires no extra sacrifice from sinners, because Jesus has already done it.

The Lord will provide becomes more than a phrase. It becomes the shape of faith, the call to cling to God in the why, and the invitation to trust that a good life without Jesus at the center is still missing the better life God gives.
