Abraham and Freedom (John 8:31–47) — A Sermon by R.C. Sproul

Devotional
Day 1: When Abiding Becomes Breathing
Jesus links true discipleship not to initial belief but to sustained immersion in His words. Freedom comes not through momentary agreement but through dwelling so deeply in Scripture that truth reshapes desires. This abiding isn’t religious duty but oxygen for the soul—a continuous inhaling of Christ’s voice that displaces slavery’s chokehold. The promise isn’t for casual listeners but those who let His words become their home. [05:31]
“If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (John 8:31-32, ESV)
Reflection: Where does Scripture feel more like a checklist than a lifeline? What practical step could help you “breathe in” Christ’s words this week?
Day 2: Lineage Lies and Obedience’s DNA
Claiming Abraham’s bloodline meant nothing without Abraham’s faith-fueled obedience. Biology cannot birth spiritual inheritance. Jesus dismantles the pride of pedigrees, showing that true children replicate their father’s actions—not his DNA. Spiritual parentage is proven not by ancestry.com reports but by whose footsteps we trace: the God who provides or the serpent who deceives. [11:30]
“They answered him, ‘Abraham is our father.’ Jesus said to them, ‘If you were Abraham’s children, you would be doing the works Abraham did, but now you seek to kill me…’” (John 8:39-40, ESV)
Reflection: What inherited labels or traditions do you lean on more than active obedience? How does your daily walk confirm whose child you are?
Day 3: Shackles You Love
Sin’s slavery isn’t forced labor but willing service. Jesus exposes the delusion of “free will” by naming our natural desire to obey sin’s whispers. Like prisoners content with cell walls, we cling to chains that feel like freedom until Christ invades. True liberation comes when He rewires what we want, not just what we do. [13:55]
“Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin. The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” (John 8:34-36, ESV)
Reflection: What sin still feels more like a “choice” than a chain? How might Christ be inviting you to acknowledge your need for liberation today?
Day 4: Your Father’s Cravings
Spiritual parentage is revealed in cravings, not claims. Those reborn through Christ develop a hunger for God’s voice; those unchanged mimic the devil’s appetite for lies. Jesus strips away religious pretense, showing that our deepest desires—whether for light or shadows—expose who owns our hearts. [20:24]
“You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him.” (John 8:44, ESV)
Reflection: What subtle desires or rationalizations might signal alignment with the enemy’s agenda? How can you actively cultivate cravings for God’s truth?
Day 5: Ears That Crave the Echo
Hearing God’s Word isn’t a human skill but a divine gift. Jesus confronts the religious crowd’s deafness, revealing that unopened ears prove unregenerate hearts. The healed ear recognizes Scripture not as noise but as a lover’s voice—a sound so precious that even the law’s demands become sweet. [26:46]
“Whoever is of God hears the words of God. The reason why you do not hear them is that you are not of God.” (John 8:47, ESV)
Reflection: Do you approach Scripture with dutiful obligation or delighted anticipation? What might it look like to ask God daily for ears that hunger for His echo?
Sermon Summary
John records Jesus speaking to those who had believed Him, and Christ immediately puts a necessary condition before true discipleship: “If you abide in my word, you are my disciples indeed.” The distinction is not between people who once made a profession and people who never made one. The distinction is between temporary discipleship and genuine, lasting, saving faith. Many may agree with Jesus up to a certain point, raise a hand, pray a prayer, sign a card, and yet bail out when His Word reaches the crux of the matter. Possession, not mere profession, marks entrance into the kingdom.
Christ joins abiding, truth, and freedom in a chain that cannot be broken. Those who remain in His Word prove themselves to be His disciples; those disciples know the truth; and the truth makes them free. The Jews resist this promise because Abrahamic ancestry has persuaded them that they are already secure. Biology, however, never brought anyone into the kingdom of God. Sonship is not defined by a family tree but by obedience, love, and resemblance to the father.
Jesus exposes a slavery deeper than Roman oppression or outward captivity. Whoever commits sin is a slave of sin, even though that slave still possesses a mind, affections, and a will. The fallen will makes real choices, but it is not ethically neutral. Human beings do not sin because somebody forces them against their desires; human beings sin because, by nature, they want the desires of the wicked one. The kingdom of darkness does not merely have unwilling captives. It has volunteers who love darkness rather than light.
Christ presses the issue from Abraham to God Himself. If Abraham were truly their father, Abraham’s works would appear in them. If God were truly their Father, love for the Son whom God sent would appear in them. Their hatred for Christ and their desire to kill the One who tells them the truth reveal another father, the devil, who was a murderer from the beginning and the father of lies.
Jesus also declares the moral inability of fallen humanity: “You are not able to listen to my words.” The problem is not that Christ has spoken unclearly. The problem is that sinful hearts have no taste for the things of God until the Spirit changes their disposition. The greatest gift of grace is therefore opened ears, opened eyes, and a heart of stone made into a living, responding heart that delights in the Word of God. The Son alone flings wide the prison gates, makes slaves into sons, and makes them free indeed.

Key Takeaways
1. Abiding proves genuine discipleship [08:52] Christ does not treat an initial response as the final proof of saving faith. The test is staying power under the searching, difficult, and humbling words of Jesus. A profession that never becomes possession cannot bear the weight of eternal confidence. [08:52]
2. Biology cannot produce God’s children [11:30] Abrahamic descent gave these hearers religious credentials, but it could not give them Abraham’s faith. God’s family is recognized through love for Christ and obedience to God, not through heritage, upbringing, or a respected family name. The family tree that matters is revealed in the fruit a life bears. [11:30]
3. Sin enslaves willing human hearts [20:24] Sin is more than a series of bad choices or unfortunate mistakes. Fallen people do the desires of the devil because those desires fit the corruption of their own hearts. This truth destroys excuses and magnifies the necessity of divine liberation. [20:24]
4. The Spirit gives ears to hear [25:55] The Word of God falls on deaf ears unless God attends it by the Holy Spirit. Regeneration changes more than outward behavior; it creates a new appetite for God’s truth. A heart that loves to hear Scripture is a profound gift of grace.
31 So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, [00:18]
32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” [00:27]
33 They answered him, “We are offspring of Abraham and have never been enslaved to anyone. How is it that you say, ‘You will become free’?” [00:37]
34 Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin. [00:52]
35 The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever. [01:02]
36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. [01:02]
37 I know that you are offspring of Abraham; yet you seek to kill me because my word finds no place in you. [01:12]
38 I speak of what I have seen with my Father, and you do what you have heard from your father.” [01:20]
39 They answered him, “Abraham is our father.” Jesus said to them, “If you were Abraham's children, you would be doing the works Abraham did, [01:30]
40 but now you seek to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. This is not what Abraham did. [01:43]
41 You are doing the works your father did.” They said to him, “We were not born of sexual immorality. We have one Father—even God.” [01:51]
42 Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came from God and I am here. I came not of my own accord, but he sent me. [02:00]
43 Why do you not understand what I say? It is because you cannot bear to hear my word. [02:08]
44 You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father's desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies. [02:16]
45 But because I tell the truth, you do not believe me. [02:40]
46 Which one of you convicts me of sin? If I tell the truth, why do you not believe me? [02:46]
47 Whoever is of God hears the words of God. The reason why you do not hear them is that you are not of God.” [02:55]
John 6:66
After this many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with him. [06:46]
Ephesians 2:3
among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind. [22:12]
Observation questions
What condition does Jesus place before those who are “truly” His disciples, and what three results does He connect to abiding in His Word? [09:51]
What reasons do the Jews give for believing that they do not need freedom, and how does Jesus answer their claim?
In John 8:37–42, what actions reveal that these people are not living as children of Abraham or as children of God? [17:46]
What does Jesus say about the devil’s character, and how do murder, lies, and rejection of truth fit together in this passage? [22:40]
Interpretation questions
Jesus speaks to people who had believed Him, yet He calls for them to abide in His Word. How does this help distinguish an early response to Jesus from genuine, lasting faith? [08:52]
Jesus says that everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin, while also speaking to people who make real choices. How can a person’s choices be real while that person is still in bondage to sinful desires? [15:41]
Why does Jesus treat love for Him as necessary evidence that God is truly someone’s Father? What does this show about the impossibility of claiming God while rejecting His Son? [25:30]
What does it mean that people are “not able” to hear Christ’s words? Why is a new heart and the work of the Holy Spirit necessary for anyone to welcome God’s truth? [19:39]
Application questions
Jesus calls His disciples to abide in His Word. What does abiding look like in the ordinary rhythms of a busy week—not simply reading Scripture occasionally, but remaining under its correction, comfort, and authority? [06:04]
It is possible to rely on a Christian family, church background, baptism, a past decision, or religious activity rather than on Christ Himself. Which false sources of confidence can quietly take the place of personal faith and obedience? [11:46]
Sin often presents itself as freedom, but Jesus calls it slavery. Is there an area of recurring sin where a person may be minimizing the problem as a mistake or habit rather than bringing it honestly before Christ for freedom? [21:44]
The words of Christ may expose desires, attitudes, or patterns that people would rather protect. When Scripture confronts something difficult, what temptations make it easier to ignore, explain away, or resist God’s Word? [07:19]
Children resemble their father through what they love and what they do. What fruit of love for Christ and obedience to God would be encouraging to see grow more clearly in one’s life? [17:58]
Open ears, open eyes, and a responsive heart are gifts of grace. How can the group encourage one another to come to Scripture with humility, asking God to create a deeper hunger for His Word? [26:46]
If the Son sets His people free, they are free indeed. Where is there a need to remember that Christ’s power is greater than sin’s power, and what practical step of faith and obedience could follow from that hope? [13:55]
Sermon Clips
“And there is no greater gift that you could ever receive from God than to have your ears opened, to have the scales taken from your eyes, to have your stony heart, from which the Word of God bounces off and off and off and that stiff neck changed so that that heart of stone begins to become a beating, pulsating, responding heart of love, where you love to hear the Word of God.” [00:26:46]
“Not everybody who comes out of the crowd and says, ‘I’m with you, Jesus,’ is my disciple. Not everyone who raises their hand the first time they hear my word is my disciple. But if you remain in my word, then you are my disciple; and if you remain in my word, you will know the truth.” [00:09:15]
“See, by nature we are Satan’s slaves willingly. We’re volunteers in the kingdom of darkness. By nature we love the darkness rather than the light because we want to do the desires of Satan. That’s what sin is. Sin’s not making bad choices. Sin is not making mistakes. Sin is having a desire in your heart to do the will of the enemy of God. That’s who we are by nature.” [00:21:20]
“What the fall does is leaves us morally impotent. We don’t come to the Word of God because we have not taste for the things of God. By nature the things of God are foreign to us. We don’t want God in our thinking. We refuse to have Him in our thinking. We have no desire for the things of God. By nature our desires are only wicked continually. That’s why God has to change the disposition of your heart before you’ll ever respond to the word of Christ. The Spirit has to set you free.” [00:19:31]
“Oh, beloved, nobody’s born a Christian. No one has ever, ever entered the kingdom of God through biology. But the Pharisees didn’t get that. They were Abraham’s descendants, and they were counting on their biological lineage, on their family tree to get them into the kingdom.” [00:11:46]
“And so then you think you’re free. No, Jesus says, “You still have wills,” but a slave on a galley ship still has a will. He still makes choices. He still has a mind, even though his hands are chained to the oars. Well your arms are chained by nature to sin. See when Jesus describes the human condition by nature, He says, “By nature you’re slaves. You’re slaves to your own wicked desires, your own wicked impulses.”” [00:15:59]
“That’s what Paul labors to the Ephesians, “Where we once walked among those who fulfill the desires of the flesh and of the mind, who were by nature the children of wrath.” That’s what Jesus came to deliver us from, what Christmas is all about – liberation, being set free from Satan.” [00:22:05]
“Abraham’s our father.” Jesus said, “No, no. If you were Abraham’s children, you would do the works of Abraham.” See Jesus defines sonship, not in terms of biology, but in terms of obedience.” [00:17:41]
“There’s a series here of consequences. Remaining makes you a disciple, remaining you will know the truth, and by remaining and knowing the truth, you will be set free. And so Jesus promises those who have responded to Him initially to stay with Him.” [00:09:51]
“And that’s what Jesus is saying here, and He told the parable of the sower where many people come quickly and embrace Jesus initially, but it’s superficial. It never penetrates to the heart. And so the test Jesus puts before these people is the test of staying power.” [00:08:52]
“Just as long as you’re sincere. If you reject Christ, you reject the Father. You cannot have the Father and not have the Son, and you cannot have the Son and not have the Father because the Father sent Him, “and he who is of God,” Jesus says, “hears God’s word. Therefore, you don’t hear because you are not of God.”” [00:25:30]
“The pagan believes that your will is unaffected by the fall, but Christianity teaches you that by nature you have a sinful and corrupt nature that keeps you in moral bondage.” [00:17:10]
“I take very seriously that this Word of God that we read and that we proclaim will fall on deaf ears unless God Himself attends that Word by the Holy Ghost and opens your ears.” [00:26:25]
“The first thing Jesus makes a distinction here between those who are indeed His disciples and those who are indeed not His disciples. He puts a necessary condition in front of what it means to be a true disciple of Jesus, and that necessary condition that He gives here is the condition of remaining, or staying, or abiding, in His Word.” [00:05:46]
“Why can’t you understand what I’m talking about? Listen to me. I’ll tell you why you don’t understand my speech: because you can’t, because you’re not able to listen to my words.” [00:19:01]
