#FaithBeyondCertainty
“When we teach faith, a lot of times we confuse it with certainty. It's like certainty has become our God. We treat people who lack certainty as weak and faithless. But look here, God teaches just the opposite. People who lack certainty are welcomed into covenant. They're welcome to walk alongside God and discover for themselves the goodness of God through the circumstances of their life. It's not the certainty that matters. It's the willingness to walk through it with God that matters. God welcomes your questions. He loves your questions, and he strengthens his covenant as we question.”

#WrestleWithDoubt
“Allowing ourselves time to wrestle with our doubts is the key because it also gives us time to see the signs of God's goodness amidst the sorrow. God doesn't rush us, so why do we rush ourselves through seasons of doubt? We need to wrestle with our doubt in order to develop perseverance, to clear up our confusion, to discover how faithful God can really be in our lives. Abraham became the father of faith that we celebrate today because he was willing to engage and wrestle and fight with his doubts. He was willing to become the father of doubt so that he might later in his life become the father of faith.”

#HonestFaith
“The life of Abraham shows us that God teaches us faith through doubt and through questioning. Doubt arises when we honestly face the reality that the world is not what we expected nor what it should be. And that means doubt is normal. Doubt is natural. We shouldn't pretend like it's not there. It's a good thing to wrestle with our doubt. It's good to be honest and take our questions to God. Facing our doubts requires courage and it helps us to have a community to stand with us to help encourage us.”

#FaithThroughTheStruggle
“For the first time, in all the time that Abraham has been following love, for the first time Abraham is getting down and dirty with God. I think what we're seeing is that our trust in God cannot be refined and purified until we wrestle with God in the filthy, gritty mud pit of life. Pure faith only emerges on the other side of that struggle. After we've been honest with ourselves and honest with God about what we think and how we feel. Only then is our faith refined and starts to become pure.”

#PurposeOverPromise
“But I hope if anything, I've encouraged you to wrestle with those doubts. It is okay to wrestle with those doubts in pursuit of the faithful God who loves you and who has plans for your life, bigger plans than you could ever imagine. Abraham got caught up on having a child, having a home, and God was gonna give him those things. But the real plan was for Abraham and his descendants to be a blessing to the world, to be part of God's redemptive plan in this world.”

#HopeThroughDoubt
“This is the kind of doubt that's not satisfied with simply tearing down the faith we've inherited just because it doesn't match reality like what happened with mister Thomas's students. This is the kind of doubt that forces us to reach deeper, to persevere longer because we know that we know that we know that there's got to be a good god in this world. Somehow, god is gonna make it right in the end. I just can't see it. I just can't see it and I say that out loud because it's the truth. Honesty. With that hope, we can endure anything.”

#RememberHisFaithfulness
“And that song just reminds me that the faith that God is going to turn things around is not something so much that we look forward into. It's something we look back and we remember he did turn it around. He did do this in my life. There are milestones in my life I can look back upon and say, this was a moment where God stepped in. And we memorialize those times, and it's out of that confidence that we can proclaim, in this moment, You'll be there for me. In this moment, you will walk with me, and we'll get through this.”

#CourageousTrust
“He took the painful step in God's direction despite his long standing doubts and weariness over this whole thing. And sometimes trust is like that. Sometimes it's less about your attitude and more about your fortitude. Sometimes you have to press a little closer to God even when desire and common sense tell you to do otherwise. Abraham did that. And I think we're beginning to see, at least I did as I was reading the story, the turning point in Abraham's faith.”
