God told Abraham to count the stars—an impossible task mirroring the impossible promise. With no son, no land, and no law, Abraham believed. His righteousness came through raw trust, not ritual. Faith preceded circumcision, Sinai, and systems. The same God who kept promises to a childless nomad still honors radical trust over religious performance. True heirs inherit through belief, not bureaucracy. [38:45]

God’s covenants always point beyond themselves to His character. The danger remains: clinging to traditions while missing the transformative relationship they signify. True faith unwraps the gift, not the box. [42:30]

Day 5: Clothed in Christ: The True Family Line

Paul dismantled divisions: in Christ, all become Abraham’s heirs through faith. Baptism clothes believers with Christ’s identity, transcending ethnicity, status, and gender. The family tree grows through adoption, not ancestry. To belong, one need not trace their bloodline—only trust the blood of the Lamb. The promise finds its “yes” in Jesus, making outsiders into heirs. [45:53]

“For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. Sermon Summary

Genealogy raises a question that goes deeper than ancestry.com, DNA tests, or a good family story from way back. The question is not just, “Where did somebody come from?” but, “Who are Abraham’s children?” John the Baptist puts pressure on that question right away in Matthew 3. John sees the Pharisees and Sadducees coming out to the Jordan and tells them not to assume, “Abraham is our father.” God could raise up children for Abraham out of rocks if he wanted to. Ancestry does not put anybody on the inside track with God.

Jesus presses the same point in John 8. Jesus acknowledges that the Jews are Abraham’s descendants, but he makes the big turn and asks whether they are true children. Abraham’s true children do what Abraham did. Abraham believed God, but these men wanted to kill the one God sent. Their bloodline was real, but their faith did not match Abraham’s faith.

Abraham’s story in Genesis shows why that matters. God calls Abram out of Haran and promises to make him a great nation, but the promise is bigger than one nation from the start. God says all nations, all peoples, will be blessed through him. Abram is 75, Sarah is barren, and there is no son, no nation, no law, and no circumcision. Still, Genesis 15 says Abram believed God, and God counted it to him as righteousness.

The promise comes before the signs and before the law. Circumcision later becomes the sign that God will keep what he said, but Israel often treats the sign like the gift itself. It is like a toddler opening a present, setting the gift aside, and getting focused on the box. God gave circumcision as the package, not the treasure.

Paul gives the answer in Galatians 3. Paul goes back to Genesis 15 and says those who believe are children of Abraham. The promise was made to Abraham and to his seed, and that seed is Christ. The law that came 430 years later cannot cancel the promise God already made. Those who have faith in Christ, those who are baptized into Christ and clothed with Christ, are Abraham’s seed and heirs according to the promise.

Genealogy can tell where a person came from, but it cannot tell who belongs to God. God’s question is simpler and sharper: whose family is this person in?
