[59:49] Observation questions
- According to 1 John 4:7–8, what two things are said about the person who loves, and what is said about the person who does not love? [36:57]
- In verses 9–10, what actions did God take to show His love, and what purpose is given for sending His Son? [40:29]
- What does John say believers should do because God loved them, and where does he say that love should first be seen? [39:35]
- What repeated words or ideas connect love, abiding in God, the Holy Spirit, and confessing Jesus as the Son of God in verses 12–16? [54:38]
Interpretation questions
- What does the statement “God is love” mean, and why is it important to keep it distinct from the statement “love is God”? How does this help believers test the culture’s definitions of love? [36:39]
- Verse 10 says Jesus was sent to be the propitiation for sins. What does that show about the seriousness of sin and the depth of Christ’s sacrificial love? [44:25]
- How can speaking difficult biblical truth be an act of love rather than rejection or harshness? What keeps truth from becoming cruel, and what keeps love from approving what destroys someone? [42:30]
- John says that the unseen God is made visible when believers love one another. What might this look like in the everyday life and relationships of a church family? [51:45]
Application questions
- Is there a brother or sister in Christ toward whom love has become difficult because of hurt, irritation, distance, or a lingering grudge? What would one concrete step toward forgiveness, care, or reconciliation look like this week? [58:35]
- God loved us when we were sinners and had nothing to offer Him. Is there someone in your life whom you have quietly decided is not worth your time, help, or patience? How might Christ’s love reshape the way you respond to that person? [48:57]
- God’s love does not help sin destroy people. Is there a relationship in which you need wisdom and courage to speak truthful love rather than simply affirming what is harmful? What would it look like to speak with both gentleness and faithfulness to God’s Word? [43:06]
- The cross shows love that does not calculate the least it can give. Where are you tempted to put limits on serving, helping, or caring for someone in the family of faith? What could sacrificial love look like in that situation? [44:07]
- A life marked by bitterness or unforgiveness can weaken the credibility of words about Jesus. Do your daily attitudes and conversations make the gospel believable to the people around you? Where might your actions need to better match your confession of Christ? [58:45]
- God’s love never runs dry in those who abide in Him. When you feel depleted or hesitant to love, how can you return to the love God has already shown you in Christ rather than trying to love from your own strength? [01:04:41]
- Love among God’s people brings joy, fellowship, and assurance. What would help you become more present, welcoming, and invested in the life of your church family? [01:07:47]
