Remaining connected to Jesus is the only way to bear true spiritual fruit in our lives. When we abide in Him, His life flows through us, enabling us to reflect His character and love to the world. Just as a branch cannot bear fruit by itself unless it remains attached to the vine, we cannot produce lasting fruit apart from Christ. The challenges and hardships of life may come, but if we stay connected to Jesus, His strength, peace, and love will sustain us and be evident in us. [25:24]
John 15:5-8 (ESV)
“I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. If anyone does not abide in me he is thrown away like a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples.”
Reflection: What is one practical way you can intentionally “abide” in Jesus today, even in the midst of your normal routine?
The evidence of the Spirit’s work in us is seen in the fruit we bear—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Yet, we all experience moments when the fruit of the flesh—such as impatience, harshness, or worry—shows up instead. This daily battle is real, but it does not define our relationship with Christ. Instead, it is an invitation to recognize where we fall short, confess it, and allow the Spirit to grow His fruit in us as we walk with Him. [31:02]
Galatians 5:22-25 (ESV)
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit.”
Reflection: Which “fruit of the Spirit” do you most desire to see grow in your life right now, and what might be hindering its growth?
Bearing spiritual fruit is not about striving harder or relying on your own strength; it is about drawing closer to Jesus and letting His life flow through you. Our efforts alone will never be enough to overcome the pull of the flesh or to produce the character of Christ. Instead, our role is to be the branch—remaining in Him, depending on Him, and allowing Him to do the transforming work in us. [39:42]
Romans 7:18-19 (ESV)
“For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out. For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing.”
Reflection: Where in your life have you been trying to “will yourself” into spiritual growth, and how can you shift from striving to abiding?
Staying connected to the vine means keeping in step with the Spirit—responding to His nudges, spending time in prayer, worship, and soaking in God’s Word. It’s not about checking off spiritual tasks, but about cultivating a relationship where you can hear God’s voice and follow His lead. As you make space for God in your daily life, you’ll find His Spirit guiding you, strengthening you, and producing fruit in you that you could never manufacture on your own. [44:34]
Galatians 5:25 (ESV)
“If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit.”
Reflection: What is one way you can intentionally make space to listen for the Spirit’s guidance today?
The invitation to “just be” with God—without agenda, schedule, or distraction—is a gift that brings life and fruitfulness. Even a few minutes set aside to enjoy God’s presence can refresh your soul and deepen your connection to Him. When you make this a priority, you’ll discover the joy and power that comes from simply abiding, and God will meet you there, pouring His love and Spirit into your life. [54:26]
Psalm 46:10 (ESV)
“Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!”
Reflection: When and where can you carve out five minutes today to simply be still with God, enjoying His presence with no agenda?
In John 15, Jesus gives us a vivid picture of our relationship with him: he is the vine, and we are the branches. Our ability to bear fruit—spiritual fruit that reflects Christ’s character—depends entirely on our connection to him. Just as a branch cannot produce fruit unless it remains attached to the vine, we cannot produce the fruit of the Spirit unless we abide in Christ. Life brings challenges, distractions, and even wounds that can threaten our connection, but the promise remains: if we stay close to Jesus, fruitfulness will follow naturally.
Bearing fruit is not about striving harder or perfecting ourselves by sheer willpower. It’s not even primarily about “living for Jesus” or “having a relationship with him” if those phrases put the focus on our own efforts. Instead, the heart of fruitfulness is simply abiding—remaining, staying, being—with Christ. When we are connected to him, his life flows into us, and the Spirit produces love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control in us. The alternative is the fruit of the flesh: impatience, harshness, anxiety, and the like. We all find ourselves on both sides of that list at times, but the key is not to justify or excuse the bad fruit, but to return to Jesus, confess, and let him restore us.
Abiding is practical. It means making space in our lives to be with Jesus—through prayer, worship, and soaking in his word, not for information, but for relationship. It’s about listening for the Spirit’s gentle nudges and responding in obedience. We can’t will ourselves into Christlikeness, but we can choose to draw near, to be the branch, and let Jesus do what only he can do in us. Even five minutes of undistracted presence with God can make a difference. The invitation is simple: stay connected, and the fruit will come. This is the life God desires for us—a life marked by his presence, his power, and his unmistakable fruit.
John 15:5-8 (NIV) — > “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.”
Galatians 5:22-25 (NIV) — > “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.”
Sometimes we we know that we are to be a reflection of Christ as we go out and about in the world. We know that people are to look at us and see and hear Jesus at us. But sometimes the fruit um the fruit's not always there. Um sometimes it has some rotten spots on it. Sometimes it didn't develop the way it was supposed to develop. Um because you know what I like I like apples. I like a good apple. [00:27:53]
But what we're going to learn today is because of Christ in us, because of what Jesus has done for us, people should be able to see him in us pretty regularly and actually fairly easily from their vantage point. Um, they what we go through to be Christlike. And so that's what we're going to look at today. [00:29:09]
If it is a mark of who we are as disciples of Jesus, um, then there has to be something pretty specific about it. Um, the last verse of the passage that Phil read, um, let me give it to you again. This is to my father's glory. You bear much fruit showing yourself to be my disciples. [00:29:45]
So, it's all about the expression of our life. That's the key to people knowing that we follow Jesus. So, what's the fruit? Uh this is um we're going to go way back to basics here. The fruit, spiritual fruit. We're looking at the spiritual fruit that the spirit produces in our life. [00:30:21]
Prior to Paul giving us that list of of spiritual fruit, prior to Paul saying, "This is how you should live," he gives us a whole another list. He gives us the fruit of the flesh. That's what you see on the right hand side. And what you see on the right hand side are basically the opposites of the fruit of the spirit. [00:31:12]
Reality of life though, how many of you all see yourself bouncing back and forth between those lists on occasion? Not in the whole, but you see one popping up every now and again. But every now and again there are times that I don't really want to be patient about something. I just want to get it done. [00:31:59]
If we're honest with ourselves, that's all of us. There are times that we show what we don't want to show. There's times that we are who we don't want to be. Please hear this. That doesn't make you a bad person. That does not mean that your relationship with Christ has been tossed aside. [00:32:43]
It doesn't mean that you're destined to hell. It means that this battle between the flesh and the spirit that Paul writes about is real. It means that every day we face things where we have a choice as to how we're going to respond. And some days we're going to win the battles and some days we're going to lose the battles. [00:33:11]
No matter how you slice it, bad fruit is bad fruit. No matter how you slice it, when it comes up, it's not exactly what God had in in mind for us. It's not at all what he had Jesus die for. And when life got hard and the fruit of the flesh exposed itself and we wrote it off, then we whole idea about what our life with Christ is all about. [00:34:38]
If we stay connected to the vine, guess what? We supernaturally produce the fruit. This sounds cheap. It sounds trit, but it's true. It just happens. If you stay connected, I read read the verse again. There's no qualifiers in here. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit. [00:39:20]
If we stay connected to the vine, we have what it takes to get through it. Because connected to the vine, we have the love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control, goodness. We have all these things to get us through. If we stay connected, it happens. [00:43:58]
Paul gave us that list of spiritual fruit. At the end of Galatians 5, he gives us this verse. This is Galatians 5 and 25. Since we live by the spirit, let's keep in step with the spirit because the spirit is in us. Keep in step. Let's walk with him. Where he leads, we go. [00:44:28]
Our assignment is not to try harder, but rather to draw closer. See, here's the thing. You are never going to be able to will yourself out of the right hand column. You will never by your own strength and ability keep yourself away from the fruits of the flesh. You know why? You're not strong enough. [00:50:48]
If we could do it on our own, we wouldn't need Jesus. But we fall into that trap each and every day. I've got to stop saying those bad words. I got to clean up my mouth. If you could do it, you would have done it already. I've got to stop treating people like this. [00:51:16]
Jesus is the only thing I can do is draw closer to you. Jesus, the only thing that I can do is be the branch and the rest is up to you. And what you need, he will give you. I guarantee you the fruit of the vine of Jesus is the absolute best fruit and will give you everything that you've longed for in life. [00:52:08]
What would it look like if you were able to find time regularly just simply to enjoy the presence of God? No agenda, no schedule, no check off list. No interruptions, no alarm clock, no time limit. What would it look like to do that? [00:54:32]
