True joy emerges when we stop striving to control outcomes and instead let difficulty anchor us to Jesus’ sustaining presence. What the world needs now is not just another policy, another person in charge, or everybody finally agreeing with somebody’s opinion. What the world needs now is Christians who are more Christ like. The fruit of the Spirit names what God produces in a person when the Spirit of Jesus takes up residence inside and begins to move through that life for the benefit of everyone around.

Paul’s list in Galatians is not a to do list and not a rule list. The fruit of the Spirit is not “do this and then God.” The fruit is the outcome of surrender, the evidence that something has happened on the inside. Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self control grow out of a life that says, “not my will, but yours.”

Jesus’ image of the vine makes that simple and hard at the same time. A branch does not strain to make fruit. A branch stays connected to the vine. Jesus says to remain, to abide, to rest, to set up home in him. Apart from him, a person withers. Connected to him, fruit grows because the life of the vine moves through the branch.

Joy is not the same thing as easy circumstances or a bubbly personality. Joy is a perspective that recognizes hardship is real, but God can grow something in the hardship. Like trees that need wind to grow deep roots, followers of Jesus often find strength in seasons that feel threatening. Storms do not mean the vine has failed. Storms can become the place where roots learn where life really comes from.

Jesus says his words are given “so that” his joy may fill his disciples and overflow. That joy does not come from bank accounts, driveways, mirrors, family performance, or circumstances lining up just right. Outside in joy is fleeting. Inside out joy comes from abiding in Jesus, then loving others, then rightly ordering the self. That is the simple spelling lesson: J O Y, Jesus, others, you.

Joy turns envy into contentment, greed into generosity, grumbling into gratitude, “I have to” into “I get to,” and fear into faith. Indescribable joy can even show up in devastation when life is held together by connection to the vine. The real question becomes simple: what needs to be surrendered so that Jesus’ way can be trusted as better?
