Abide in the Spirit: Discern, Confess, Overcome

John grounds Christian living in the Holy Spirit dwelling in every true believer. The Spirit does not merely give an inward feeling, but bears witness that believers belong to God and empowers a life marked by doctrinal purity, love, and obedience. God’s abiding presence makes obedience possible, not as a way to hold onto salvation, but as the fruit of belonging to Him. The Spirit who remains in God’s children gives them discernment to recognize truth and spot error.

John therefore says, “Do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits.” The Spirit of truth guides believers into truth because He always points to Jesus Christ, who is the truth. Satanic spirits, by contrast, work through deception, trying to make error sound close enough to truth that it becomes palatable. God’s Word must be the standard for every voice that claims to speak for God, whether that voice stands in a pulpit, claims prophetic authority, or carries the name of a Christian denomination.

The confession of Jesus Christ becomes a clear dividing line. Romans joins heart belief and mouth confession, while a genuine confession must also be backed up by the way a person lives. Jesus cannot be remade according to cultural preferences, political labels, or personal definitions. Scripture confesses Jesus as the Creator God of heaven, God incarnate who came lowly, took away sin, rose victorious, and now sits at the Father’s right hand making intercession.

John exposes the revisionists because they refused to confess that Jesus Christ had come in the flesh. Their error did not always come by outright denial, but by glossing over the truths they did not want to confess. The spirit of antichrist still works this way, making lies sound acceptable and teaching a Jesus that is not the Jesus of Scripture. Every false message ultimately pulls people away from the sufficiency of Christ and the authority of God’s Word.

John then gives believers a blessed promise: “He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.” God’s children do not overcome deception through fleshly strength, but through the Spirit of God who lives in them. The world prefers a works based path because earning feels natural, but salvation is God’s handout of grace, not man’s achievement. God alone saves, God alone keeps, and God’s children must stay submitted to the Spirit, hear the truth, reject the false, and live according to the truth.
