Three Lies That Deceive the Christian Heart

Hebrews 3 gives a strong warning: “Beware, brethren,” because an evil heart of unbelief can depart from the living God. The deceitfulness of sin does not usually come in loud and obvious. Deceit works slowly, telling a lie long enough that it “has done its work,” while truth comes limping after it. The heart can grow hard by repeating what is false, and the worst deceit is not always fooling somebody else, but fooling oneself.

The second lie says, “I can straddle the fence.” Joshua’s warning and Christ’s words about serving two masters both tear down the idea that a person can hang on to God and mammon at the same time. First John says that a person who claims light while walking in darkness is lying. Comparison helps that lie survive, because a person can always say, “At least he’s not a murderer,” or “At least I’m not like so and so.” Estimation does the same thing, because everyone proclaims his own goodness. Distortion does the same thing too, softening adultery into an “affair,” rebellion into “irreconcilable differences,” and disobedience into nicer words. Galatians says God is not mocked, because whatever a man sows, that shall he also reap.

The final lie says, “I have arrived.” Philippians 3 shows Paul counting everything loss for Christ and still saying, “Not that I have already attained.” The closer Christ draws a person, the more that person learns about dying to self, bearing the cross, and pressing on. The Spirit does not leave the believer stuck in pride or self-confidence. God molds, shapes, and works in the heart so that truth is followed instead of self-deception.
