“Jesus doesn't just defend us pretending we're innocent. He's already paid the penalty for our sin. He says, yeah, you're guilty, but I'm gonna take care of that, and I'm gonna stand in the gap. So whether you're someone who's been comfortable with sin or someone who continues carrying guilt over sins that you've already confessed, I want you to hear this morning that the answer is the same for everyone. It is Jesus Christ. Our confidence isn't that we become good enough to deserve forgiveness. Our confidence is that Jesus Christ has already done everything necessary to secure our forgiveness. Stop trying to hide your sin. Stop trying to earn God's forgiveness and return to the Savior who has already provided everything you need.”

“Church, the wonderful truth of this passage is that we don't have to hide our sin. We don't have to pretend that we have everything figured out. We don't have to convince God that we're better than we really are. He already knows our hearts, and despite knowing every sinful thought, every sinful attitude, every sinful action, he has still graciously provided forgiveness through Jesus Christ. And that is something that we should praise him for.”

“Finally, and perhaps most... More importantly than than any of the others, once you've confessed your sin and you've turned from it, you've repented, trust God's promises of forgiveness. Remember what John told us in verse nine. God is faithful and righteous to forgive us and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Some of us are very good at confessing and then beating ourselves up, but the reality of the gospel says that once we are forgiven, we do not have to carry that thing any longer. Church, if God has promised to forgive us through Jesus Christ, who are we to insist that his forgiveness is not sufficient? Confession and repentance aren't supposed to become an endless exercise in guilt. They are habits that continually bring us back into fellowship with God.”
