Our faith is not meant to be a beautiful, decorative object kept solely for personal enjoyment. Just as a candle's purpose is to give light, believers are called to illuminate the darkness around them. This calling involves giving of oneself, much like a lit candle drips wax, signifying the sacrifice and vulnerability inherent in being a witness for Christ. Embracing this purpose allows God to use us to bless others and share the transformative work He has done in our lives. [39:15]
Matthew 5:14-16 (ESV)
“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”
Reflection: How does the idea of being a "lit candle" challenge your comfort zone in sharing your faith? What small step could you take this week to allow your light to shine more brightly?
Jesus' final words to His disciples before His ascension were not about earthly kingdoms or timelines, but a clear mission: to be His witnesses. This mission is not to be undertaken in our own strength, but with the promised power of the Holy Spirit. This divine empowerment enables believers to share the message of Christ, starting in their immediate surroundings and extending to the farthest reaches of the earth. It is a call to be laser-focused on helping people come to know Christ and grow in Him. [43:08]
Acts 1:8 (ESV)
But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
Reflection: Where in your life have you recently felt a prompting from the Holy Spirit to be a witness, and what specific action might that prompting be inviting you to take?
Being a witness for Christ is akin to a witness in court: one testifies to what they have personally seen and heard. It is not about having all the answers or being a theological expert, but about sharing the firsthand experience of God's work in your life. Whether it's the peace He has brought, the forgiveness of sins, or a miraculous intervention, every believer has a unique testimony. Our role is to faithfully share these personal truths, allowing others to hear the evidence and decide for themselves. [47:30]
1 Peter 3:15 (ESV)
but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect,
Reflection: What specific story or experience of God's work in your life could you share with someone this week if the opportunity arose?
The call to be witnesses is not an individual endeavor but a collective one, addressed to the church as a whole. Jesus' command to reach Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and the ends of the earth outlines a comprehensive mission that requires every believer working together. From reaching our local city and surrounding region to supporting global missionaries, the church's combined efforts, diverse gifts, and shared resources enable a far greater impact than any individual could achieve alone. It is through this unity that Christ's message spreads effectively. [53:30]
Ephesians 4:16 (ESV)
from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.
Reflection: Considering the church's collective mission to reach our city, region, and beyond, what unique gift or passion has God given you that could contribute to this shared effort?
Generous giving is a vital aspect of spiritual maturity and a powerful way to support Christ's mission. When we give cheerfully and faithfully, we are not only funding ministries, church plants, and missionaries, but we are also honoring God and aligning our hearts with what He loves. Jesus promises that when we give, we will receive in full, pressed down and running over, demonstrating that we cannot out-give God. Our financial contributions become a tangible expression of our love for Jesus and His desire for all people to know Him. [01:05:24]
2 Corinthians 9:6-7 (ESV)
The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.
Reflection: Reflect on your current giving practices. In what ways might God be inviting you to grow in generosity, not just financially, but also in your time and talents, to further His mission?
The teaching calls Christians to live on mission together, rooted in Acts 1:8’s commission. It frames faith not as a private ornament but as a light meant to be shared — costly, sacrificial, and empowered by the Holy Spirit. The central charge is to be witnesses: people who testify to what God has done in their lives, not to carry the burden of conversion but to faithfully present evidence of Christ, trusting the Holy Spirit to work in people's hearts. Witnessing is practical and relational; it begins in the local context (the city), extends to the surrounding region, crosses cultural and social barriers, and reaches to the ends of the earth.
Practical outworkings of that mission are emphasized: planting a new campus in Desert Hot Springs to reach the greater community, supporting global missionaries through partnerships, and mobilizing volunteers to serve in the ministries that make evangelism and discipleship possible. The Holy Spirit’s presence is presented as both word and power — providing the encounters, the words, and sometimes tangible demonstrations (healing, dreams, changed lives) that accompany faithful testimony.
Finances and stewardship are taught as integral to mission effectiveness. Giving is portrayed not as optional overhead but as a spiritual discipline that directly funds outreach, church planting, and pastoral care; generosity is a means by which the church can expand its reach. The teaching urges faith-filled giving, anchors that practice in biblical precedent (the early church’s sharing and Old Testament tithing), and highlights that financial choices form the desires of the heart. Spiritual maturity is measured, in part, by willingness to invest in the mission — to support staffing, facilities, and ministries that multiply witness.
The call concludes with an appeal to move from decorative faith to sacrificial, communal witness: give time, gifts, and money; serve together; and allow the Holy Spirit to use ordinary testimonies to bring people to Christ. The posture encouraged is faithful, generous participation in a church that seeks to be a multiplying presence in its city, region, and the world.
``and it was the first 10%. You know why? Never in my life at the end of a month am I like, I have an extra 10%. Right? You like that? I mean, maybe if you have a real good salary, you do. You have just more money than you know what to do with. We have some plans for you if you do. But but for most of us, you'll never have 10% left. So, what did god ask people to do? He wanted them in faith to step out and say, the first 10% I'm giving to the lord and I'm going live on the other 90%. If you make a thousand dollars a month, that means you're ready to $100 check to the church and you live on the other 900.

But the reason I'm talking so much about giving is when we talk about the mission, yes, we give our time. Yes, we give our talents. We're going talk about that next week. But it also requires finances. If we're going to reach our Jerusalem, our Judea, this church plant is going to take money. If we're going to plant churches in other parts of Southern California, it's going to take money and our missionaries require money and so part of the mission is we need to together all do our part of what god leads us to do to give generously to the church. So that more people will know Jesus Christ. That one day when we get to heaven, we'll be amazed that all the people, maybe even in different parts of the world, we had no idea came to Christ because we financially gave as a church community. Let's pray.
