2 Timothy: Preach the Word!

Paul’s charge to Timothy rises straight out of the truth that all Scripture is God breathed. The word of God is inspired, inerrant, sufficient, and authoritative, so Paul does not tell Timothy to offer hot takes, stories, or platform-building speeches. Paul says, “Preach the word.”

The Great Commission commitment of a healthy church includes raising up disciples from cradle to grave, and it also includes raising up men who can preach the word and serve as elders. A church is only as healthy as its leaders, and leaders are only as healthy as their faithfulness to God’s word. The licensing of six men stands as a local church saying, “These men have been seen, tested, affirmed, and sent.”

Paul grounds the charge in three realities. Christ is present, so preaching happens Coram Deo, before the face of God. Christ will judge the living and the dead, so men who preach will give an account for what they taught. Christ will appear and bring his kingdom, so every act of proclamation must serve the coming King, not a man’s platform. The aim is not for people to remember a preacher’s name, but to cherish Christ’s name.

Paul gives the calling with plain force. Men called to preach must herald the King’s word boldly, in season and out of season. The calling commands where a man goes, where he lives, and what he does with his life. The call to preach is not a call to comfort, but a call to come and die. The wives of such men are not an afterthought, because God uses their steady help to bless the church and keep men faithful.

Paul also insists that preaching must reprove, rebuke, and exhort with complete patience. Exposition lets God set the agenda, not the preacher or the congregation. The whole counsel of God must be preached, not just the parts that are easy or popular. Patience matters because people do not usually change overnight. God’s work in his people is often “low and slow,” like good brisket.

Paul names the challenges plainly. People will reject sound doctrine, crave teachers who scratch itching ears, and wander into myths. Bad doctrine kills, and an inch of doctrinal myth in the pulpit leads to a mile in the pew. Paul therefore calls men to be sober minded, to endure suffering, to do the work of an evangelist, and to fulfill their ministry until they can say, “I fought the good fight. I finished the race. I kept the faith.”
