2 Thessalonians 2: 6-12 - Coming Soon the Antichrist

Paul opens 2 Thessalonians 2 by telling the church not to be quickly shaken or alarmed. The day of the Lord is coming, but false words, fake letters, and fearful rumors must not move God’s people off the truth. The man of lawlessness, the antichrist, will come in deception, not looking like some scary monster that everybody would run from. Satan’s counterfeit will come smooth, like a snake oil salesman, with power, false signs, and wonders meant to make people believe a lie.

John’s warning that many antichrists are already in the world shows that the spirit against Christ is not only future. The spirit of antichrist twists who Jesus is, tells people they can live however they want, and tries to make darkness look normal. God’s warnings work like a disconnect notice in red letters. God tells people beforehand where a trajectory leads because He does not want them destroyed by the very things they chase.

Jesus alone is the way, the truth, and the life. Good behavior, knowing about Jesus, or waiting until a deathbed cannot redeem anybody from the wrath to come. Christ stands between sinful people and the Father, taking the whole rap sheet and wiping it out by His grace. Paul’s bluntness toward the Thessalonians comes from love because deception is not a small thing and eternity is not a game.

The mystery of lawlessness is already at work, yet God is restraining evil until the proper time. The Holy Spirit’s restraining work keeps lawlessness from fully running amok, like power keeping a freezer from filling the house with the smell of what has gone bad. The removal of that restraint will reveal how quickly society falls apart when truth, honesty, and God’s people are pushed aside.

Christ’s return will not be a long back-and-forth battle. Jesus will kill the lawless one with the breath of His mouth and bring him to nothing by the appearance of His coming. Satan is a created being, a copycat trying to mimic Christ’s miracles and even the resurrection, but God’s word carries unmatched power.

God’s strong delusion falls upon those who refuse to love the truth. Darkness becomes chosen because people want their lifestyles more than they want Christ. Yet God still says, “Now is the day of salvation.” Repentance means turning from the old way, letting the Potter break, mold, and remake what sin has damaged, and trusting Jesus to be more than a copilot. Christ receives the mess, forgives the confessed sin, and begins making a masterpiece.
