Our Prayer For You 2 Peter 3: 1-7

Peter’s final words in 2 Peter 3 pray that the church would have more than an awareness of Scripture. Peter wants a sincere, firm understanding, the kind that says, “Now I know.” The words of the prophets and the command of Christ through the apostles carry one unified testimony: God has spoken, God has acted, and God will keep speaking the final word.

Confirmation strengthens faith when suffering, pressure, and confusion get the mind in a tailspin. God’s Word calls believers first to hear the truth, then to confirm it, and then to obey even when every detail does not make sense. God’s promises prove true not only when He gets somebody out of trouble, but also when He gives perspective, exposes what is broken, and shows what needs to change.

Peter centers that firm understanding on Christ’s return. The return of Jesus is not a vague idea for someday. Christ will return, and the church needs to grab hold of that truth instead of merely being acquainted with it. God’s Word becomes the natural place to lean when something big and impressive tries to produce fear.

Scoffers come with mockery, humiliation, and questions meant to create confusion. Their question, “Where is his coming?” tries to turn the delay of Christ’s return into proof that His promise is empty. Peter identifies their real problem: they deliberately overlook what God has already done by His Word.

God’s Word created the heavens and the earth without God needing to lift a finger. God’s Word separated the waters, called creation into being, judged the wicked world through the flood, and preserved Noah and his family. The same Word that made all things and brought judgment before has stored up the present heavens and earth for final judgment.

God’s mercy holds back wrath and gives time for repentance, but mercy will not be delayed forever. Christ will rescue His children from sickness, death, disasters, grief, evil, and every broken thing that does not work as it should. God’s final kingdom will bring a new heavens and a new earth where everything is right because everything is under His perfect rule.

Christ’s final return will silence the scoffers for good. Christ will put an end to evil just like protection put an end to a little girl’s bullying. Christ receives sinners who come to Him, and His Word gives fearless assurance to those whose faith has been shaken.
