15th Sunday after Pentecost

Matthew 18 names the place where frustration does not get the last word. The world piles on with school, money, groceries, fuel, housing, broken lawnmowers, and all the daily stuff that can leave a person feeling bound up and ready to lash out. The pressure can blind people until they are throwing punches at everything around them, feeding right into the anger that is already making life miserable.

God speaks into that worn-out place with the call to turn around. Ezekiel’s picture is not of a God who enjoys seeing people crushed under bad choices, mistakes, and destructive roads. God wants people to stop, change direction, come back, and live. The path of anger may feel natural when the world is pushing hard, but it does not have to be the path that gets chosen.

Matthew’s words call believers to bring the real stuff to prayer. Christ says that when two agree on earth and ask, the Father hears, and where two or three gather in his name, Christ is right there among them. Prayer is not only for sickness and big prayer lists. Prayer is also for the diesel bill, the family stress, the bad day, the fear, the hurt, and the thing that keeps somebody awake at night. The answer may not look like the answer a person had in mind, but God is still present and responding.

The blindfolded boy throwing punches becomes a picture of life under pressure. The world wants to blindfold people to God, so they cannot see, cannot hear, and just keep swinging wildly. God’s voice may first sound like a brief interruption, something easy to dismiss before returning to the fight. But God keeps calling. God says, “I’m here,” until the blindfold comes off and the child runs into the Father’s arms.

Christ does not always remove his children from every hard thing. Christ holds them in the middle of it and says, “It’s okay. I love you. I’m proud of you.” Paul’s command to love the neighbor shows what that embrace produces, because love does no wrong. The table then becomes a place to lay down the gloves, the armor, the anger, and the burden that cannot be carried anymore. Jesus receives his children so they can leave the fight behind and sing a new song of joy and love.
