“What what's in there? What what is going on with my faith? What what do I believe about God? What do I know when I'm just sitting here on the face of this planet with no spiritual leadership responsibility? And what came to me at the time, and it felt like a little gift from God. Just like in the gospel, said God gave this insight to Peter. For me, alone in the dark night on a June summer night, what came to me was that, well, one thing I'm confident about that I feel like I know is that I'm a creature. I get to just be a creature, and God's the creator. I don't have to worry about all that God has to worry about. I just get to be a creature. And that this creator wants their creatures to know them, that there's a desire for a relationship.”

“Have you ever experienced something you couldn't think your way out of? Suddenly, Smith had to answer those questions in a different way. Maybe you've had that experience, your own bout of depression, a relationship that you've tried everything to fix, a problem with someone you love that you can't figure out, can't think your way out of it. It was in this dark night of the soul that something changed for Smith, and he stopped trying to answer all the questions in the same way.”

“What does your Jesus look like? Does he have a beard, long hair, or glasses? We will spend the rest of our lives trying to discover who Jesus is. We'll never quite get there, but it's a worthy pursuit. Keep at it. But imagine with me, guess who sits on the other side of our board? It's Jesus. And guess what? He doesn't have a board because he doesn't have to guess who we are.”
