1 Peter 1:3-12 | Living Hope

Peter opens 1 Peter 1:3-12 with praise, not because life has become easy, but because God has done what only God can do. God, the Father of the Lord Jesus Christ, receives blessing because his great mercy has caused guilty offenders to be born again. God’s mercy is not small or ordinary. God shows remarkable compassion to people who deserve wrath, and that mercy gives new birth into the family of God.

Jesus’ words to Nicodemus make that new birth plain. Natural birth, family background, religious knowledge, and personal pedigree are not enough. Christ teaches that flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives spiritual life. Christ takes the sinner’s place, lives the sinless life, dies the substitutionary death, and grants forgiveness and new birth to all who turn to him in repentance and faith.

Peter calls that new birth a living hope. The living hope is alive today and expectant for the future. The resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead anchors that hope, because Christ’s resurrection means future resurrection for those who belong to him. That future expectation gives life in the present, even when the present hurts.

The inheritance attached to that hope is imperishable, undefiled, unfading, and kept in heaven. Fruit goes bad, earthly glory expires, and worldly treasures lose their shine, but God’s inheritance has no expiration date. God keeps that inheritance safe, and God also guards the believer by his power. The text gives double locked security: the inheritance is protected, and the believer is protected to receive it.

Peter then brings joy and suffering together. Trials grieve God’s people, and some trials may last a lifetime. Yet even a lifetime of hardship is “a little while” when set beside eternity. The fire is not random, because God uses heat and pressure to prove the genuineness of faith, making it more precious than gold.

Peter does not call believers merely to grit their teeth and bear it. The text calls for perseverance with joy, and that joy is not a fruit of human toughness. Joy is a fruit of the Holy Spirit. The believer who has not seen Christ still loves him, trusts him, and waits for the salvation of the soul.

Peter closes with privilege. The prophets searched and inquired into the grace that has now been announced. Angels long to look into these things as God’s plan unfolds. The Christian life is not merely an obligation, but an opportunity: relief is coming, just not yet.
