1 Peter 1:22-2:3 | Born Again

First Peter 1:22 through 2:3 sets the new birth at the center of Christian life. John’s account of Nicodemus shows that being born again is not a religious adjustment or a second try at the same old life. Jesus says flesh gives birth to flesh, and the Spirit gives birth to spirit. The New Testament gives evidences of that regeneration without making those evidences the cause of it: faith in Christ, love for the brethren, a changed relationship with sin, the witness of the Spirit, perseverance, hunger for the word, and obedience to God.

Peter then presses the point that the new birth gives God’s people a new family. Having purified their souls by obedience to the truth, believers are called to “love one another earnestly from a pure heart.” That love is not sentimental or surface-level. Jesus sets the high bar by laying down his life, and John says the brothers ought to lay down their lives for one another. Only the Spirit can create that kind of love, because human effort cannot manufacture a love that pure.

Peter also roots this new life in an eternal source. The seed is not perishable but imperishable, “through the living and abiding word of God.” Flesh is grass, and human glory is the flower of grass. The grass withers, the flower falls, but the word of the Lord remains forever. Human beings may try to make God fit their own image, but God declares himself plainly: “I am the Lord, and there is no other.” God’s love comes from everlasting to everlasting, and the soul loves because God first loved it.

First Peter 2 then shows that the new birth creates a new appetite. Malice, deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander must be put away because they do not nourish. “That which does not nourish poisons.” Like newborn infants, the regenerate soul longs for pure spiritual milk, because spiritual appetite does not create spiritual life, spiritual life creates spiritual appetite. The word gives life, sustains life, and matures life. The gospel does not simply bring a person to Christ; it carries that person through the Christian life. God’s people never outgrow the word that made them alive.
