Sunday Livestream // 1 John 5:13-21 | Know with Certainty

John brings first John to its close by setting Christian certainty against a world full of uncertainty. The housing market, the economy, gas prices, groceries, earthquakes, doctor visits, and even tomorrow itself all sit under the big banner of “none of us know.” But God does not want his children uncertain about eternal life. John writes “to you who believe in the name of the Son of God,” and that audience matters because these certainties do not belong to just anyone. They belong to those trusting the eternal Son of God who came in the flesh, died for sins, and rose again.

John’s first certainty is that those believing in the Son of God have eternal life. False teaching steals assurance by pointing Christians back to performance, works, or anything other than Christ. But John shuts the door on doubt and opens the door to assurance and joy. Like Corrie ten Boom in the concentration camp shower room, and like Horatio Spafford writing “It Is Well with My Soul” after unbearable loss, joy can stand in uncertainty because eternal life is certain in Jesus.

John’s second certainty is that God hears and answers prayer. The prayers of believers are not falling on deaf ears, and there is no busy signal with the God of the universe. God answers according to his will, and his will is better than anything a believer could have asked. Even healing comes in his wise ways, sometimes immediately by miracle, sometimes gradually through medicine, and sometimes finally in glory.

John then speaks about sin that leads to death, and the hard verses still make one thing plain: sin is serious. A believer walking in sin should repent, and believers seeing a brother or sister in sin should pray. The lost should be prayed for as well, because rejection of Jesus, the Son of God, leads to death.

John’s third certainty is that God has given victory over sin. Those born of God do not keep on sinning because Christ protects them, and the evil one cannot grab hold of them to destroy them. Christians may still wrestle with sin, but they cannot honestly say, “I can’t stop,” because Christ came to destroy the works of the devil.

John’s final certainty holds all the others together: Jesus Christ is the true God and eternal life. John began by defending the divine nature of Jesus, and he ends the same way. All assurance, answered prayer, and victory over sin come through him. Little children, keep yourselves from idols.
