Paul reminds the Corinthians that life in this world is like staying in an Airbnb. Life here matters. Marriage matters, kids matter, work matters, singleness matters, and relationships matter. But none of it is home. The present form of this world is passing away, so Christians cannot confuse a temporary stay with their permanent home.
Paul frames his counsel with three realities: the present distress, the appointed time growing short, and the world passing away. Life is hard, life is short, and life is eternal. Undivided devotion to the Lord must shape everything else, including marriage, family, grief, joy, possessions, and work.
Marriage is a good gift from God, not a sin and not something God looks down on. Paul is not bashing marriage. Marriage is created, ordained, valued, and loved by God. But marriage is not heaven, salvation, or the answer to loneliness, fear, dissatisfaction, and every other deep longing. Marriage brings real responsibilities, pressures, cares, and anxieties. A spouse cannot carry the weight that only Christ can carry.
Christ must be enough whether someone is single or married. Christ must be the source of peace, rest, joy, identity, purpose, hope, and satisfaction. Marriage is a wonderful gift, but a terrible savior. When earthly circumstances become everything, every difficult season shakes a person to the core. When Christ is everything, hard seasons can be endured with a secure rest in him.
Paul calls Christians to hold Christ’s gifts loosely and Christ himself tightly. Marriage, mourning, rejoicing, buying, possessions, and dealing with the world are all real parts of life. These things are good gifts, but they are not everlasting, ultimate, or sufficient. Any good gift becomes dangerous when the heart clings more tightly to the gift than to the Giver.
Paul’s concern is that devotion to Christ would be undistracted and unfragmented. Marriage, children, career, homes, sports, leisure, money, and travel can all pull a heart in a thousand directions. A godly marriage, however, should not fragment devotion to Christ. A godly marriage should help both husband and wife get home. Christ first does not weaken love for a spouse or children. Christ first unlocks the kind of selfless, patient, prayerful, faithful, Christlike love that families actually need.

Key Takeaways
- 1. Marriage is a terrible savior Marriage is a gift, but it cannot heal the deepest places of the heart. A spouse cannot provide salvation, ultimate identity, or lasting satisfaction. Christ alone can bear the weight of eternal longings without crushing the relationship beneath them. [14:44]
- 2. Hold Christ’s gifts loosely Marriage, possessions, grief, joy, and work matter deeply in this life. But none of them can provide what home with God will provide. Gratitude enjoys the gift, while idolatry demands that the gift become ultimate. [18:57]
- 3. This world is not home The present form of this world is passing away, even when life feels comfortable and familiar. The Airbnb image calls Christians to live faithfully here without falling in love with here. Home is better because God is there. [21:21]
- 4. Christ first strengthens family love Christ’s first place does not cause husbands, wives, or parents to love less. Christ’s first place teaches them how to love rightly, sacrificially, and without asking family members to be God. A healthy family is fueled by shared devotion to the Lord. [28:56]
- 5. Undivided devotion reshapes everything Paul’s concern is not merely whether someone is married or single. Paul wants hearts that are not fragmented by temporary things. Christ at the center puts every other love in its proper place.
