1 Corinthians 3:16-23. No Secrets

Paul keeps the Corinthians in the same conversation about spiritual milk, solid food, and building on the only foundation that can hold, Jesus Christ and him crucified. The milk of the gospel starts with the basic foundation, but growth means Scripture begins to affect the whole life, work, family, friends, and every ordinary place where faith gets tested. Paul’s construction picture presses the point that every teacher and every believer builds on Christ, but not every material is the same. Gold, silver, and precious stones endure, while wood, hay, and stubble burn up.

Verses 16 and 17 refuse to be skipped, even though they are difficult. Paul says, “Do y’all not know that y’all are God’s temple?” because the church together is the dwelling place of the Spirit. The warning about destroying God’s temple is aimed at false teachers who wreck the church and damage the foundation already laid. The text is not a blanket statement that suicide is unforgivable, and the darkness of mental health struggles is real even for Christ followers. God’s people are not immune from those struggles, and seeking help is not weakness or faithlessness.

Paul then turns again to the wisdom of the world and the foolishness of the gospel. The world looks at a Jewish carpenter, a rabbi with twelve misfit disciples, a crucified man buried in the ground, and calls that foolish. Christ walks out of the grave three days later, ascends to heaven, and sits at the right hand of the Father, so what looks foolish becomes the wisdom of God. The gospel still sounds crazy to the world, but Scripture and changed lives show God’s plan unfolding right in front of human faces.

God cannot be outsmarted, fooled, or tricked. God is not partly present somewhere, as if only a piece of him is near. All of God is everywhere, all the time, even in the smallest places no human eye notices. No plan makes God say, “I didn’t see that coming.”

Paul’s closing words tear down boasting in men. Paul, Apollos, and Cephas are gifts, but faith cannot rest on people because people will fail. Christ followers rest in the hand of the Creator, and he never fails, not even a little bit. The phrase “all things are yours” means there are no Christian secrets, no hidden code, no privileged knowledge. God has preserved his Word, revealed the gospel, and made salvation plain: Jesus is the way, all have sinned, the wages of sin is death, and the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus the Lord.
