And what makes this passage uncomfortable is that Jesus is not correcting he's not only correcting their theology about divorce. He's exposing what's deeper underneath what they're saying, that we have a tendency to negotiate with God instead of surrendering to him. Well, God, can I at least do this? If you let me do this, what are the exceptions?”
