Paul is praying for more than intellectual understanding. He wants them and us to have the mind of Christ, to have that holy spirit enlightenment so that we would understand the confident hope that comes with knowing that we are chosen, that we would understand the rich and glorious inheritance we are promised as his chosen people, and that we would understand and know the incredible greatness of god's power at work in us. Later, Paul will explain it this way in chapter three verse 16 through 19.
