God graciously comes to Jacob at his lowest point and promises his permanent presence, even outside of the promised land. And when that happens, we're going to see this passage is kind of a turning point for Jacob. Something changes. Something shifts here. If we can take New Testament concepts and put it here on the Old Covenant, I think this is the passage where Jacob gets saved, transformed, because he meets the one true living God.
