Bitterness is an issue of the heart that affects our soul. That's the picture that Paul's trying to help us understand. It's the picture that God was speaking of all the way back in Deuteronomy that he wanted his people to understand. This affects our soul. Biblically, bitterness is not a private issue. It's a communal one because it can become contagious when we don't deal with it and it can impact the growth, not just of you or the one who is carrying the bitterness, but of others around you.
